Default Yamaha 225

Take a quick look at this 225 Yamaha on eBay. Give me your thoughts on this motor.

The motor looks very clean. Be careful though, just because it runs good on the stand it may not under load. I have no idea what price you should offer if everything says bid. Bill Mc ;D

I don't have any experience with the motor, but it looks like a decent unit. Quick check with NADA (not the best authority on pricing, but reasonably close) showed low retail at $1350, avg. retail $1610. If it comes with everything listed in the ad that might ad a couple hundred. The seller has a good history and gives most of the technical info you'd want to know up front. When it comes to eBay, my philosophy is that it better be a good deal or bargain if it's not something I can go see in person. If I were bidding, I'd stop below $2000, but would be more apt to try and steal it for $1800.

FWIW. I'm no expert by any means, so this is just what my gut tells me about this item.

Looks great!! Just make sure you check it all out!!
Ask if it has had the shift rod replaced!!!!! This is like a $500 to $1000 job if you don't tackle it your self!!

There is a small gap down near almost the lower unit were you will see the shift rod. About 1" of it. Check well!! You might not see the rotted part?? It is most likley just below were you can see.

Just to give you a idea, I bought a 1989 175 Yamaha with all the equiment needed to install. Oil tank, oil tank bracket, wire harness for both the oil tank and engin, sjift controll and the all in one Tac. I payed $1800 that was 2 years ago. And it is not as good looking as that one.

Is this for your Welcraft?? This is more motor then you will ever need!! I have the 175 and I feel it is perfect for the boat. it is 400 pounds. Yours is 22 pounds heavier so the weight will not make a difference. Should be fine!

God luck

MJ, the Ebay ad says that the shift rod has already been replaced. ;)

Guys, thanks for the critique. I've been lookin around. Not real real seriously. I thought this motor looked pretty darn good to be so old - that is not always a good sign!

I'm likely gonna keep lookin, but you never know - if the price is right I might dive in. That motor is within driving distance - 5 or 6 hours from my house.

We'll see!

Thanks again!

Looks like a nice engine. If his information is accurate 120 psi on all cylinders and new shift rod . . . it's worth checking out.

I've asked this seller a million and 1 questions and everything checked out except one small detail - he sold another 225 Yamaha in Oct. to an eBay member that was astonishingly similar - new shift rod, appr. 650 hours, lower unit touched up, stored indoors etc.

That's all ok, but in looking over the Oct. auction details I noticed that 4 out of 7 of the pictures of that motor are the same exact photos as the ones for this motor!! Only the powerhead photos were different!! His explanation was that he's had 3 of these motors in the last 6 months that were nearly identical. He further states that he keeps his eBay verbiage in a word processor and only changes the things that are necessary from one item to the next....

I don't know about you, but photos of the actual motor should be necessary - I don't care how similar they are! In his ad, he says there is slight fading on the cowl that doesn't show up in the pictures - that's probably because the motor in the pictures is not the motor he's selling! Its the one from October!

This is probably a great motor and a decent buy, but I think its pretty bad to advertise this as the actual motor.
I'm really really dumb, but I wasn't born yesterday ;D

Here's the link for the October sale - see for yourself!

I'm scared to bid.
