I'm thinking of covering over the empty rod box holes in my V with starboard. I've never actually seen or handled the material. Can it be painted?

Handles like wood, but because of it's chemical resistance, it cannot be painted. It is uniform color all the way through.

Like said, it cuts with any wood cutting tools! It will never rot and is nice and strong!
Starboard comes in a couple of different colors, most should be what you need. Then there is Seaboard, same as Starboard but made for the food industry, Comes in a host of colors and is usually cheaper then Starboard, if you can find it in your area?? Comes in sizes 1/4 to 2" in size, full sheets are 54" X 96" No it can't be painted, Nor can it be glued, has to be put toghter with hardware. For your rod boxes if you looking to make covers and not need much more then that, I ould go with 1/4, but if you want to mount anything to them, I would go 1/2" But this stuff is tuff!! Even 1/4 won't break! I have replaced all the wood in my boat, bulkheads, dash, tank covers, walls, all with Seaboard!

MJ:
Where did you buy the seaboard? I need to replace my bifold cuddy door. The screws all snapped off inside the plexi and I can think of no way to extract them. Thanks

I heard, second hand, that it can be joined w/ a construction adhesive such as "PL" or "liquid nails", if it is doable, I think you would have to use the one that is suitable for plastics, abs, fiberglass. I have used it when installing fiberglass tub or shower inserts/ surrounds.....couldn't say for sure about the starboard
