Default Qustions on kicker motors

Looking for pro and cons on stern mounted kicker for an 83 V20 cuddy. I plan on trolling for walleyes here in Minnesota and/or salmon on Lake Michigan My question is engine size 9.9 hp or 15hp and whether it best to get short or long shaft? I plan on linking the steering with my main engine, 175 hp Evinrude.

Short shaft and if I had smaller lakes with HP restrictions like I had I would go with the 9.9
If general boating, emergency get back home and trolling were my only concerns then a 15 HP for sure.
My 9.9 pushed my 86 V20 Cuddy at 10 mph with a couple of guys on board. But that was not fighting any current or wind to speak of. I think a 20-25 would be ideal as long as you had a good quality bracket and the engine weight was not to much
I had the 9.9 because a lot of lakes here in the peoples republic of NJ have restrictions.

The older evinrude/johnson 9.9's and 15's were the same engine except for carbs. They only weigh something like 74 pounds or so.

As to brackets, I use an EEZ-IN bracket. It's adjustable rather than fixed so you can lower the engine when you need it and raise it out of the water when you don't. Pretty much identical to this one on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/outboard-mot...item3cbd9ef41f
Even with the up and down travel of the kicker I have it connected to my main engine so I can steer from the helm station. (Although, truthfully it's a PITA sometimes because I have to walk back to the kicker anytime I want to adjust the engine speed) If you get one of these brackets, just make sure that you get one rated for the HP size engine you are going to hang on it since they come in several different capacities.

FWIW I always recommend a remote kill switch on a kicker near the steering wheel of the boat...... probably never need it but if you ever do saving a few steps can make all the difference

personally I think that if a 9.9 makes 10 mph it's plenty and a 20 probably wouldn't go much faster at all but just push the bow higher and use more fuel

I would think long.... less likely to have the prop come out of the water when it's rough.... someone above said short tho.... I'm curious as to why.

I'm planning on adding a kicker to my v20 as well but my main reason is for a backup to my 37 year old motor
