Default serial number on an evinrude

Can anyone help with some information on a serial off of an outboard number? I'm hoping to find out what year it is by the serial number. Thanks! Craigan.

If I had the full number I'd be able to tell you.
Usually, the year code is the last two digits or the last 2nd and 3rd digits.
Here is most of the info you will need.

Your engine will have a model number on it, usually between 8 to 12 digits.
Example: V J 120 T L CE A

Each digit reveals important information for your specific engine.
The year is revealed by using an acronym called "INTRODUCES".

The Model Number Digits identify
STYLE - DESIGN FEATURES - SHAFT LENGTH - YEAR BUILT - SUFFIX/MODEL RUN.

Where to find your model number:

Johnson/Evinrude Outboards:
The model number tag is located on the top outside edge of the CLAMP BRACKET; or, on top of the SWIVEL BRACKET HOUSING (port or starboard). It's usually a metal tag or a sticker. Often there is a quarter size silver piece with numbers stamped on it.

If you're still unable to find a model number on your engine, (sometimes will be worn off or scratched off), there is a silver core plug on top of powerhead with model and serial # or p/n on power pack can help with determining the year.

Also check on the welsh plug (freeze plug) on the block (power head) for numbers/letters. (If powerhead has been rebuilt or replaced this probably won't help you. (Will only reveal the part number of the new, not original powerhead.

What Your Model Number Tells You - OMC BRP Outboards Evinrude/Johnson
STYLE:

J = JohnsonE = Evinrude (E also is for Evinrude E-Tec).

HORSEPOWER:

Self-explanatory - Will list 1 to 3 numbers here between 2 and 300 HP. Example "115" = 115 hp.

DESIGN FEATURES:

C = Counter RotationD = Remote ElectricE = Electric Start w/Remote SteeringFA = 4-StrokeFE = 4 Stroke, Tiller ElectricFR = 4 Stroke Rope StartI = Ficht Fuel InjectionJ = Jet Drive K = 3 Cylinder 25/35 hpM = Manual Tilt, Electric StartMS = Manual Tilt, Electric Start, SpecialN = Counter Rotation P = Power SteeringQ = 3 Cylinder 25/35 Trim & Tilt R = Rope StartRW = CommercialSL = 60 degree V Trim & Tilt.

SHAFT LENGTH:

Blank = 15" L = 20" Y = 22.5" X = 25" Z = 30"

YEAR BUILT: "I N T R O D U C E S"

I = 1, N = 2, T = 3, R = 4, O = 5, D = 6, U = 7, C = 8, E = 9, S = 0

Model Year Examples: ES = 1990, ED = 1996, SS = 2000, SN = 2002, etc.

The 235 was nick named the 2 thirsty 5 for a GOOD reason, it didn't have 2 fuel pumps for nothing. It is a strong engine for it's size, but it crams ALOT of air AND FUEL into it to do it.

Therm and Skools are right.

I had the pleasure of running two of OMC most ineffiecnt motors. (a 84 Big Bore 235 and a 93 -250HP V8 outboard) Although the V8 had two more cylinders the the 235, it actually burned 5 gallons a hour less than the 235 at WOT!

That's a thristy motor.
