Default One man's trash...

is another man's... next project?

I spotted this ad on Craigslist last Saturday:

http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/boa/1116786531.html

It was a take it or leave it deal but it was located only about 20 minutes from me so I ran over and took a look. It was sitting on the back of a 1987 23 foot Wellcraft center console in matching colors to my boat. The guy alos had a Grady W/A and a 13 foot Whaler. He had just bought the Wellcraft and was going to fix it up and put on a 4 stroke that he already had. I decided to take a chance on it and since my motor is off I hauled it home on the back of my boat.

Here is one problem:

The shaft carrier is corroding and cracking the housing. I will try to remove and clean it up and then see about having the crack welded. This is apparently common on these units.

I did a compression check and got 95-100 psi on all six and this was on a cold engine that has sat all winter plus I was using an anemic battery so it was cranking slow. I'll hook up the controls this weekend and try to get it running and see if I can sort out the "running rough" problem. One thing I spotted was the the carb linkage cam follower was off the cam by quite a bit. I pulled the linkage of and the bottom carb isn't closing all the way.

This carb links to the oil pump on the other side and that seems to be what is keeping it from closing all the way. I'll have to check that out too.

Worst case I figure I can part it out and get my money back but it would be nice to have a "spare" motor.

nice score mb, hope it's an easy fix. A buddy of mine has an early 90's 115 v4 Yammi with the same crack in the prop shaft housing. Let me know if you're able to weld it up.

$275! You can't beat that. Worst case you can definitely part it out but I am sure you can get that thing running for pretty damn cheap.

I'm real curious if the Johnson/Evinrude stuff will bolt up to that??
My powerhead is identical looking to that one, do the similarities stop there?

Is that a 25" motor? If so, I have a friend with a good lower for sale ($750)
