Default Norfolk Portmouth area boat ramps

Not sure if this is the right forum but there really isn't a regional section... Anyway I will be moving up to Portsmouth, looking like the Suffolk area, and have no idea what the public ramps are like up there. Are there even that many or are they few and far between? I am weighing my options with dry stack, wet slip, or trailer. Also what are the usually HOA policies for boats in the yard? Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks.

Hey CS What brings you up this way to live? I worked in Portsmouth for 33yrs and I have used some of the ramps and most are pretty good. There are a couple of guys that live in portsmouth and suffolk on here so they should be able to give more info than me.

Default Ramps in Suffolk and Portsmouth

CSVENCER, You will find a ramp on Hilltop Rd between Rt17 and RT337 back beyond the public school. It is a nice ramp, quiet but, there are no facilities to speak of and the ramp and park are closed at sunset. Bennett's Creek ramp just off Rt 17 is good with fuel and a eatery. I think they charge about $3.00 ramp fee. If you are going to be close to Rt 10 (Godwin Blvd) in Suffolk, there is ramp about 1 mile just past the Obici hospital. This is a nice ramp and dumps intot he Nasamond River. I can't use it right now since the tornado went through Burnett's Mill and I can't get the boat out of the neigborhood. If you are going to be in Portsmouth I suggest the City Park ramp off of Portsmouth Blvd and City Park Ave. Double in and out ramps. lots of parking, restrooms, strong night lights and the ramp and park do not shutdown at sunset. This ramp dumps into the Western Branch River and dumps into the Elizabeth River. From there you can be in th James River very quickly or out to the ocean in 20 minutes or so. Turn starboard entering the Elizabeth and go past the Norfolk Navel Shipyard and you are in the ICWW. There are many more ramp available than mentioned here only I do not know them personally and could not speak to their accesiblity or condition. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just got transferred up to Portsmouth for work and I am not so sure I am ready for the chilly weather, but the change will be nice. I am looking at getting a place in Suffolk so the ramp by the Obici hospital sounds good. Has anyone heard anything about the harborside dry storage area http://www.harborsidestorage.com/ ? It looks nice and would be ideal but not sure about the dry rack idea. Any thoughts?

It's about a two hour drive north from Suffolk upon the Rappahannock River. Their prices start around 145 to 165 monthly for boats up to 20'.

Check 'em out http://www.harborsidestorage.com/hbs04.htm

Do you have any experience with them? Is it a half a$$ operation or do they take good care of your baby?

Harborsidestorage is too far away. I live in Northern Suffolk and there are several ramps and marinas for your choosing. It really depends on how you use your boat as to what ramps or marinas would be the best choice. If you bmail me your # or I'll send you my office number I know the area well and could answer any question you have about boating or other things. I trailer my boat and use ramps from Suffolk to Va Beach depending on where or what type of fishing I want to do. Bennetts creek also has a ramp but they close at dark which can be a pain and I think that all the Suffolk parks close at dark.
