Default Who's running a 200hp outboard?

I have to repower from a 175hp and due to availability, it looks like I end up going 150hp or 200hp. There have already been threads on 150hp performance, so I was seeing if anyone had a 200hp?

How does it affect how the boat sits in the water?
Any safety/strength concerns with the transom?
What prop do you run?
Basically seeing if you can relate anything from experience about running that much power.

Thanks!

same prop as your 175. RPM's won't change but speed will. The motors weigh the same since both are same size lenght and V6's. will use a little less fuel on plane due to work less to keep you riding.

I've run a 92' V-20 CC w/ a 200 hp merc (2001 carbed) and it was a great setup. Topped out just across 50 from memory and cruised low 30 just loafin along. No problems weight wise. Most of the V's were rated 235 I think.

Thanks, guys. I figured since it's a V-6 already on there, that there wouldn't be much difference. I won't know until spring/summer what my budget is, but I'm figuring a new e-tec or 4-stroke won't be do-able. There are some deals on used 140 and 150hp strokers that might be within range, but for the same or more often less money, it looks like I can get a freshly rebuilt/later model 2-stroke (be it carbed, EFI, DI) with 200hp. We'll see after tax-return time. ;)

I'm very happy with mine. I came up from a worn out OMC commercial 155 hp. I didn't go the 200 4-stroke route mostly because of weight -- the price difference was negligible. The stern sits slightly lower with the 200, and there is a difference in the handling -- not bad different, just different. I notice it most in a cross wind situation, and have thought about adding trim tabs but probably won't.

Of course the 200 does shoot the boat out and up on plane in a heartbeat, and probably added 12 mph to her top speed. But the beauty (to me) is being able to loaf along at 30-35 and feel like she's not working hard at all. And I'm burning less fuel than I did with the 155. Coming up from a 175 you might not see that much difference, but it's a world of difference for the Pipe Dream. ;D

Ches, whats up w/ the 175 ? If you're new motor shopping, the prognosis probably is'nt too good....go w/ the 200,I have a 150 Johnson which is just fine, but I'd sure like another 50 ponies.

chesapeake724:

I run a 235 hp on a 26" setback bracket and the boat handles it fine. I run a 14.25 inch, 19 pitch 4 bladed prop and get 43 mph (GPS verified) at 5100 rpm. BUT the old crossflow ponies burns 23-24 gallons an hour doing it! After reading the thread on 150 HP performance numbers I'm a little envious and would much rather have a 150 if repowering.

"Getting on plane quickly is nice, burning less gas while doing it - Priceless!"

Thanks, MJ

phes'
The Johnny's been acting up lately. The last time out, I was running nicely all day. Then halfway through making a little two mile run, there was a gradual decline in rpm's before dying. Tried for a maybe 45 mins. to get it going, and while on the phone w/ TowBoat, it magically fired up. It cut out when I tried to put it in gear but started right back up. Tried to get the anchor pulled so I could just rev it, throw it in gear and make a suicide run to the dock, but no joy. It wouldn't start again, forcing me to proceed with the tow. Nothing 'blew up', so it might not be a major repair, but I don't trust it anymore. I threw some money at it and did what I said I'd do: run it 'til it didn't run anymore and that's where I am now. So, I'm in the repower market for maximum reliability at sort of the minimum price.

kamikaze,
Is yours an older OMC? My motor is the '87 Johnson 175hp, but the same motor in '85 was called a 235hp. In this timeframe, OMC went from a powerhead rating to a more-accurate propshaft rating, hence the decrease in what's on the cowling. Just curious if it's the same deal. I couldn't tell what motor you had from the little pic.
