Have a 1987, V 20 Cutty Cabin and want to move the batteries forward. The batteries are all located under the motor well, which to me is the worst possible location. Why! if excess water gets in the boat it is going to the stern where it can short out the batteries. No battery power means no radio, bilge pump lights, ETC. Looking for suggestions as to the best location. There are four size 32 batteries. After removing the GAS tank (cut out a lot of foam) and installing another one have lots of room ahead of new tank. However, not sure if I can isolate the gas tank and possible fumes from the batteries. Believe there would be to much summer heat in the cabin. HELP!!

I have the same boat you do. At some point I intend to put the batteries in the infloor well between the helm seats. I pause to call it a livewell, cause I don;t know what you'd keep alive in there.

i'm in the middle of relocating the batteries in my '81, they are located under the splash well like yours, I'm moving them to under the fish box lids( about three feet futher fwd), I'll post some pics when I get done relocating them

There are 4 batteries in my ol' gal...1-crankin' 1-accessory(bait-tank & bilge-pump) 2-group 31s for the trollin' motor... :D ...
I would hesitate to do anything to add weight to the bow of one of these cuddys...it's a mistake I made and wouldn't wish on others...is there space to fashion a platform where the batteries are now to raise them above the water-line...or inside the two hatch lids in the transom, even if ya had to give up that storage space...not forward... ;) ...JMHO...

I agree!!
Don't move all that weight up front in a cuddy, you will be sorry you did. Not only that, the battery's take a beating up front slamming around all the time. Just put in good Battery boxes strap down well. If you have enough water in your boat to short them out, you have a worse problem at hand!!

To much weight forward will keep the bow down, there for getting more slap, also when coming off a wave the bow will come down fast, and if you think you pound some now weight till you add the extra weight up front!!
CC ride so much better out of the box then a cuddy, cause they are bal. much better!

First made a major error, the boat is a 1978 not the other year
Why so many batteries. Two are for 24 volt trolling motor, one for cranking, bilge pump, live bait tank, navigation lights etc. and one for VHF, GPS and depth recorder/ fish finder. In this area (fresh water) we trolling at one to two MPH for Stripers using the trolling motor. Have one concern. The storage area infront of the motor well is not sealed off from the gas tank. Come to think of it the current battery location is not sealed off from the gas tank; there is about four feet seperating the two. Wow!! youy guys are good. Thank you for your input. Warner |
