Guys .....
I need an engine for my 88 V20 restoration and have been looking for a while now. I currently have 2 possibilities I am considering - which would you choose ? 1 - a 2004 my "new in box" 150 Yamaha carb model (no prop, controls, etc - just engine) and probably with no warranty as I would mount it myself $6795 at Ed's Marine 2 - a 2002 my 150 Evinrude FICHT, less than 50 hrs (complete with prop, all controls & gauges, etc) with no warranty. Owner says runs great - no issues. I think $5500 will get it. Thanx, Brian

i dont know the specific year [or years] but some of those fitch modles are ticking time bombs. why no warranty w/ the yamaha?

From what I understand - Yamaha's warranty is void if the motor is not installed by qualified dealer. I could be wrong about that though. The bad FICHT's ... (from what I read) were mostly '98-'99 era motors .... nothing but good words for 2002 and up motors.

I wouldn't hesitate on a FICT year model AFTER Bombardier got all the bugs out, but if it's a used motor, still check compression AND run it if you can...would pay to have certified Bombardier tech go over it,...let him do comp. test...can present owner purchase extended TRANSFERABLE warranty(you'd pay for it) prior to you buying?...
Good luck, sounds like either choice is good...I've also heard that about Yams "in-the-box"purchases...if you go that route, what's the additional to have dealer install so you get warranty?...probably worth it... ;)

I'd go with the 'Rude Ficht. IIRC, before 2000, the problems were with the bigger blocks, 175hp and up. After 2000, no problems in the whole lineup, so the 2002 should be fine. At 50 hrs, it's barely broken in. You're saving on the cost up front, especially when you add $500+ for prop, controls, etc. for the Yammy, and then you'll save at the fuel pump as the 'Rude will drink less gas.
The only risk is with not having a warranty, so minimizing that risk is worth a little investment that you might not get back. I would make the sale contingent on an inspection (at your expense) by a qualified service tech. |

If you are not going to get a dealer to install the yamaha then there is no question about going with the rude . I have a 150 yamaha and it is a great engine but so are the new evinrudes. You want go wrong either way , but there will be a little more cash will be in your pocket with the evinrude . Not to mention the 30-35% less in fuel savings . With that in mind I would go with the evinrude for sure.....

check into a new left over Johnson, or something. They are fair price and they have warr. if you install on your own.
I Boats has a 03 Mer Optimax 150 25" shaft program motor with a 90 day warr $7,600 They also have a refurbished 01 Yamaha 150 20" shaft for $6300 with 60 day warr. But if your going to spend that kind of cash you should get all you can get and a warr also!! Good Luck!!

Well, my first thought would've been Yamaha all the way, but then again, I've never heard anything at all good about Ficht until now.
These guys seem to know their stuff, so I'd have to take their advice and experience over my gut feeling at this point. So, if you go with the rude, can I buy the Yammi? ;D

Sorry guys .... I go with the carbed Yammi. They are bulletproof. Especially when you are choosing between engines with no warranty.

Well My first Motor was a 6hp Johnson,
my 2nd was a 60 hp Johnson, My 3rd was 90 hp Mercury, 4th was 165 I/O, and my 5th and currant is a 175 Yamaha I loved the Johnson and the Yamaha!! If I was going to buy new I think I would go Johnson for no other reason then price and the fact that you can install them your self and still have a warr.! I love the Yamaha but they are so much money and then you have to pay for the install if you want the warr. IMO they are not all that much better!
