Well the new boat was running fine until I hit something a few weeks ago while coming home. At first all seemed fine just bent the prop but after having the prop done it ran just fine. The next week I went to start the boat and got this loud grinding noise from the lower unit. I was lucky and it was only a bad u joint but it did bang around the housing some which I figured I need to inspect. Well last night while removing the bell housing and the oil line running to the lower unit I broke off the nipple (not sure why its made of plastic) that the line hooks to. I cannot reach the other side of the fitting in the boat and now I need some help. Do I have to have the reserve tank hooked up or can I just fill the lower unit as you would any other lower unit?

You can use it without the bottle connected, you will lose the insurance of the reservoir though. Also you have to make sure that the quick connect in the upper portion seals off completely or else water will get into it when you dunk her.

I can cap that off and I can cap off the line coming into the boat. I only broke off half of the nipple but my biggest concern is if the clamp comes off then I have an issue with water getting into the lower unit. I did come up with an idea to fix the nipple. If I could find a peice of tubing like a small break line I could cut it so it goes down into the remainder of what broke off and into the peice that I broke off. I could clean out the nipple section of all oil and maybe epxoy them in place using the tubing for strength.

Yea thats what I was think. I still do not get why they would make a peice like that out of plastic.

just replace the nipple, now that you've broken the outside end off(finish it off with a chisel if needed) and push whats left thru to the inside, once you have it off from teh inside, you can remove the clip that holds it in place on the inside. When you installl teh replacement, if you have teh room, try to install the clip back in place, its a PITA, but it can be done, worse comes to worse, put fast cure 5200 on the replacement tube and push it in place, you may need to put something on it to hold it in place. That 5200 will hold better than the little clip would, and it seals with the orings on the tube. Once its dry, you can hook up the quick connect on the resevoir hose
