shaft lenght and weight of motor

Cheers everyone and thanks for a great site and congrats to 4 years of service! I suppose I don´t add much to help others but for a wellcraftrookie like me reading the service sections has sure helped me a lot! Right now I am thinking of getter a new outbord för my V20 -88. Today the boat is powered with a Mariner 135 hp -88, wich in my opinion is to weak for my purposes.
Does anyone one know what shaftlenght I´m looking for. 20" or 25", Large och Xlarge? Do both fit, are we looking at different performance depending on what lenght I chose? How do I measure the length of the present motor?
And secondly; since today´s outbords are heavier, does anyone have a clue about the maximun weight to put on the back of the boat? I am thinking on getting a newer Optimax 175 or 200 and they seem much heavier than the old sleak 135 Marathon.
Grateful for any answer or linksuggestion I can get!

You should be looking at a long shaft. With your 88 V-20, you should have a 25" transon as with my 86 v-20.

Careful there Hammer, L=20", XL is 25". On an 88' there is a 90% chance you have a 25" transom. Measure from the top of the transom, where the motor mounts, to the bottom, just under teh drain plug. That measurement is going to be either 20 or 25".

Gee thanks a bunch for your help. I´ll just have to pull the cover of the boat and measure I guess. And I will post some pictures as soon as I get an idea how it is done!

anders, there's not any appreciable performance difference between 20" & 25" motors...25 is more desirable due to 5 more inches of transom height...harder for water to get over and allows motor to tilt all the way outta the water when docked...





The new 175 & 200 HP Optis each weigh in at 497 lbs...(see correction below...Slot caught me...)

Couldn't find weight for your 135 Mariner , but 135 Opti is 431 and 135 Evinrude DI is 419 ... if ya want the Opti, I'm sure not tryin' to steer ya away...it's a GREAT motor, very fuel efficient and POWERFUL as all get-out!!

But the E-Tec 200 (not HO) tips the scale at 419 lbs...you'd add 65 HP and NO weight...this is the motor that two members here have recently or in the process of having installed on their "V"...

REEL, not you too? The 175 opti weighs in around that 431 mark. The 135, 150, and 175 are all built on the same block. The 200, 225, and the 250(maybe) are built on the 497# big block.

As to part of the original question, I have a personal weight goal o no more than 468# for my next motor.

As for performance, they perform the same on the proper transom, but you can't run the wrong shaft lenght and expect proper performance.

WOW...went back and dbl checked...you right, Slot 175 is 431lbs...good catch ;) ... the 200 E-Tec is, uh still...REELAPEELIN' ;) ...



But like I said... I DO like opti-max motors ;D ...spent a lotta time offshore w/ 2 of 'em ;D I'd call 'em flawless fuel-sippers 8) ...
