Default Trim rod

I have a150 hp Ocean pro (E150EXERV) 1994 When I go 3,000 rpm's or higher I hear a rattle, been driving me crazy, thought it was my newly rebuilt powerhead. Well I found the noise to be the water forcing against the trim rod on the midsection which moves around sloppily. Question, Do I need that rod, it seems to do nothing ? Thanks for any input

If it is what I think it is, it may need to be there to prevent a reverse kickup...Something may latch onto that when motor is in down position...not sure though.

Someone that knows for sure may post on it.
