Motor test question
Last time I ran my V-20 it started to miss and hesitate. So I took apart and rebuilt the rochester carb ( 165 Mercuriser).
I'm wondering how high can I rev it to test whether it misses before putting it back in the water? I know with an outboard it ain't a good thing to do. I don't wanna overheat it either but, would like to test it for a few minutes first. Any thoughts TIA. ??? Btw...the points and plugs are new and set properly and the fuel filter is clean...as is the gas in tanks.

In order for the test to mean anything it probably needs to be run under load. To answer your question, it shouldn't hurt much of anything to run it up to 2500 for a few seconds.

I/O needs to be getting water all the time!! To be able to fill the motor, if you have FWC system it needs water to get to the exchange boxes!
Never run with out water full blast!! Niow I have had mine to 3000 RPM's for quick test, and I belive I was told never to run more then 2000 for prolonged times. And I followed that to the letter and never had a problem.

I keep the boat on a trailer most of the time and always flush it after an outing, tho' usually only at idle for five minutes. Tomorrow I'll run it no more than 2000 rpms for two minutes and listen, if all sounds good I'll test run it in the river, .....Then I'll take it fishing !!!! *;D You guys are great. * ;) *
