Default may need CDI/Power Pack for 92' Yammi 150

may need CDI/Power Pack for 92' Yamaha 150. Took it in to have the carbs rebuilt and my friend says it is only idling on two cylinders. It is a V6 and he says it is only idling on the middle two cylinders. He is going to test everything out but I believe it is either the CDI/Powerpack, or the Stator. I doubt 4 coils went bad.

New Powerpack is pretty expensive. Should I go used? Does anyone have one forsale?

Just to make sure I have the right idea, a CDI is yamaha's version of a power pack.

I don't have the exact model number but it is a 1992 Yamaha 150 prescision blend 2 stroke.

Hour meter shows about 800 hrs

thanks

If the CDI unit is only firing the center two cylinders, I doubt if the engine would barely run at all. In order to get the plugs to fire on a 92' or earlier Yammie V6's, you need a very good battery that will turn the engine over at a high speed. Get a spark tester and the spark should jump a 1/4" to 3/8" gap. The CDI unit on early Yammie V6's is a very bullet-proof unit and most senior Yammie techs agree that a bad CDI is a very rare occurrance. A bad stator is also rarely seen. That doesn't mean that they can't be defective, but just do the obvious things like plugs, wires, caps, batteries before you start throwing very expensive parts at the problem. I think plug caps were a problem on 92 Yammie V6's. Most of the ignition problems on these engines are caused by bad grounds!!

I think that there is a used CDI unit for auction on EBay as I am writing this reply. (10/16/06) $100.00 vs. $500.00+ makes sense to me!!!

Check in with the IBoats Forum (iboats.com) They have resident Yamaha techs that have been working on Yamaha V6's since Yamaha began importing them in 1984.
When you ask them a question, make sure you give them the correct year and model #. The model # is on the starboard side of the mounting bracket (looking from the back of the engine forward), and will be something like ETXN. I hope this helps!!

Thanks Geek1
I think the problem may have been my friend error or the plugs. He siad that he did a compression check and the compression is good. The carbs were rebuilt and the new plugs were installed. I did not bother checking the spark myself. I did take it out on the water and the boat ran fine and got up to speed without problems. I will have me wife help me check the spark this weekend.

thank,
Collin

Yep its a 1994, 150hp, 25" shaft It runs but it has a over heating problem?

Has new stats, water pump and pisses great! But something is wrong?

The last person (not BR) new of the problem and hid it by putting a cooler plug gaped short to keep it running cool, as soon as I gaped and added the right plugs it over heated bad!
