Found a 1985 center console, comes with a 1995 mercury 200 o/b, t top and leaning post. Sounds like a good deal, going to take her out nextweekend probably. Anyone have any thoughts on the merc???
Always had evinrudes till now. Anyone interested in a 1983 cuddy with a new motor. I don't have room for both. |

Put the new motor on the new boat, then sell all the old, you now have the boat and motor you wanted.

all I can say is ,of the dozen or so,of the boats i've owned they have always been johnson/evinrude.From 15-200 hp never had any problems...they all were properly used and not abused.I had one Merc., 90hp inline 6,that too ,properly used...however....lower unit, powerpacks, starter, sometimes would start at the touch of the key, next day it would'nt, VERY tempermental carbs. , it was kinda loud at troll, cruise and wot.I think that most of todays large outboards are good, not one clearly stands above another, but for the afore reasons mentioned,I dont think mercury would be my first pick

3.0 liter or 2.0 or 2.5 liter? I have a 150 v-6 merc and a 1997 225 3.0 liter. No problems. I would consider trading my 86 Steplift for a center console. Sounds interesting.

Franco, a good friend of mine had a 200 Merc in that vintage...Merc used a PLASTIC gear in the auto-oiling system that's proven what I believe to be unreliable...it'll torch your powerhead when it fails...I'm leary of that model Merc...if your info uncovers improvements in that setup, that would be my only idea about it...motor performed well til the gear failure...maybe if you can by-pass auto-oiler and pre-mix... ;)...
Sure is a good lookin' boat... ;D...but I'd hate for you to invest all your hard-earned boat bucks into a 200 HP Norton Snagger... :o...

Looks good!! Get it and worry about the power after its home.
I had one Mer. in my life 1990 90hp. Good motr but not my first pick!! not even my 2nd! First is a tie, Yamaha or Johnson In this battle Johnson would win, for no other reason then they will allow you to install your self and keep the Warr. Yamaha will not!

MJ - I checked with the Yamaha dealer and they will let you do your own installation. The catch is that you have to get the dealer to "go over" your work to certify the installation, which they said they'd charge me $100. It would be $300 for full installation.
