I have a 2000 jeep GC which has a rear axle seal leaking and I was thinking about replacing it myself if its not too much work. I just want to know how involved is the job and is it something I can do in a few hours. If its easy I'll go by the library and get a manual but if its an all day thing I may take it to the shop. I'm pretty good with tools but just don't have time if its an all day thing. Thanks for any help.

If it's the rear pinion seal, they are easy......but if you over or under tighten the pinion nut the rear will roar at different speeds. Other people will tell you that you are damaging the gears when in reality you are changing the wear locations in the gears.
Try as best as you can to measure, count the revolutions of the nut and notice where the nut is tightened to before removal.
I've done the rear in my "96 Cherokee (forgot which rear it had) and the bearings, seals and pinion seal in my wifes "80 CJ which has an AMC20 rear.

Thanks I'll stop by the library and pick up a manual tonight on the way home. I didn't think it would be much but I have thought that before and it turned out to be the job from he!!.

I don't know about expert(although some consider me one). Which seal is leaking? Is it the pinion or an axle seal? If it is a pinion seal there is a good chance that more is wrong with it than just a seal. If you have a 6 in that thing then you have a DANA 35, if it's an 8 you have the HYBRID 44 in it. If it's just an axle seal, that is no big deal to replace. Put it on jackstands and remove the wheel, caliper and rotor.IIRC that axle should be a non c-clip style, if so there will be a hole in the axle flange in between 2 wheel studs. If the flange is solid then it is a c-clip axle and you'll have to remove the cover to get the cross shaft out to remove the C-clip. If you have the hole in the flange(which I think you should have) then remove the 4 nuts that are right close to the axle and then slide the axle out. The seal will actually be down inside the axle tube, and there should also be an O-ring around the bearing on most. I'll get you a picture of what your looking for here shortly for around the axle and such.
