| $$$$$yamaha parts$$$$$

I decided to put a smaller outboard on my tin boat [duratec/duranautic 14ft.] I had a mid 80's 35hp evinrude which runs great...it is just to much motor for the hull [never thought I'd say that......too much power] anyway I got a 1988 yamaha 15hp. which seems to be a perfect match. Motor runs very well but I felt it was running a little hot, you could hardly touch the heads while running. Checked out the thermostat first.....packed with sand, probably [maybe] original and quite salt encrusted. I go to the closest marina 3 miles away, ask the guy for a thermostat.....he hands me this little box, Yamaha printed all over it, and a gasket....he says 53.00 [????????] I politely/sarcastically say , oh , no thanks I just need one. He says yeah, 53.00. I couldn't believe it....t-stats for my 150 johnny are 32.00 for the pair. Whatever. Now it runs at a normal temp. This is my first yammie, I know they are good motors and I am quick to learn that parts are expensive. The Evinrude is up for sale. Anyone interested? Pull start, tiller arm, always maintained, owned it for almost 21 years, gently used, not abused. Good-very good overall cond runs nice.

X2 Reel has a point. I just serviced a 90 Yamaha 4-stroke. Plugs, oil, fuel filters(2), oil filter, impeller, gasket, gear lube and three o-rings for $200. All parts are high IMO. A friend of mine toasted his lower unit on his new Yamaha 200 4-stroke, insurance replaced the lower with a new Yamaha lower. If I recall the numbers right the price was about $3400 and I thought that was high until I found out the insurance adjuster had told him "Could be worse, Mercury V-6 lowers are $5000." Ouch! Lets assume the yellow guy is the consumer. |

Part prices really vary around here, marinas being the highest. If you can wait a little parts are usually 5-about 30% cheaper online-some offer free shipping. Im very lucky, my best bud is a Yamaha/Mercury dealer, he gives me his cost....the mark up can be crazy! I have also found the mark up in general boat parts is significant....didnt realize how much until I saw his cost on items. We have a West Marine 'Express' down the road and some items I've see are 100% markup!!

Hi Pete, I know how you feel, but its like our business ... when I give ppl estimates they look at me like I have three heads.... then you try to explain the cost of materials..... its outta control. the prices of the composites make my head spin, and anything petroleum based seems to go up once a month. good luck selling that motor.

That's the way it is, so when you can dodge margin along the way, you've done good...like The Pubah did when he wore his V-20 T-Shirt to The Red Barn...
