Default JohnRude voltage regulator

I searched this subject and figured I'd try to get a little more engine specific info by starting a new thread. Engine is a 1990 EVINRUDE 225. Voltage gauge was pegged past 16 volts earlier this summer. I've recently done some work to the engine including a new stator. Engine reads 13 volts while running off the hose in the driveway. In the water up on a plane and moving it now reads about 16 volts, still high, but not pegged like before. I've tried turning on accessories, but the only one that really drops the voltage down to 13-14 is the trim motor. All battery connections are clean and tight. My clymer manual mentions recitifier/regulators for my engine, but doesn't get into specifics or show any pictures. I'm guessing I need a new regulator(?), but wondering where it is located, and what it looks like, and if it's a pain in the arse to replace. If any V20 motorheads care to guide me in the right direction I'll buy the beer. Thanks!!

Center of the engine on top behind the flywheel under the power pack lies the regulator. You have to remove the power pack and take part of the harness off to lay that cover over and then 6 bolts and she comes out. Sounds like she's shot though as mine with twin batteries will still hold almost 14 at idle in gear in the water and never goes above 14.8. I believe 15.2 is the point at which they are said to be bad. I would still check all the connections at it first and make sure it's getting a good battery voltage reading off of the purple wire at the strip under the pack as that wire is the one it uses to set voltage off of. Also make sure that the bolts on the pack are making a good ground contact because without a ground it will run whatever voltage it will hit with a 35 amp charge.

I was kinda afraid you'd say that Ferm, all those power pack wires scare me. I'll double check all connections before I venture further.

Everything is tight and clean. I pulled the cover off the power pack--damn I don't want to mess with all those wires! Guess I'll call my mechanic. Thanks for your quick reply Ferm, you are a gentleman and a scholar. I owe ya some cold ones!

Once you get the pack off the regulator is the part directly center in the block underneath it all. Should look like a hard jelly in the top of it I believe deoending upon what year one you have. Also be prepared to bend over once you ask for a price for it.
