Cuddy Hatch trouble

The cuddy hatch on my boat has always given me trouble. *The two sections seperate in rough seas (just when you nedd a hatch bouncing back at you!) *It was modified by the previous owner with some screws at the ridge on the front edge of the bottom piece, I was wondering what was there originally? *
There is a good deal of play between the teak on the upper section too.

Any ideas?
