Water Line

Am I missing something. ?? Been looking at alot of teh pictures of everyones baots and all and seen one boat with the hull painted. Now what i dont understand stand is that the scupper deck drain is below the waterline on the hull. This is the same as mine. Wont water come in and sink the boat ????
I was debating to just run the floor deck drains straightinto the bilge area, so whenever I get water on the deck, she will drain there, but then I would have to get the through the hole drains patched and that means more $$$$$$ I would prefer to leave them, but just dont understand the way its set up. To me it looks like sea water will enter the boat and sink me.

Hammer, I'll give it a try...but whatever you do, DON'T pipe your deck-drains into the bilge...or plug your scuppers...

Are there ''flapper'' valves on your scuppers?...or ''ball'' valves?...these are designed for ONE-WAY water flow/ water allowed OUT, but not IN...VALVES must be in good working order for them to work, so if poor condition, replace them...

You have a ''Self-Bailing Hull''...which means your boat will automaticly remove any water that gets into it...the floor deck is just above water-line and SHOULD drain water back to the scuppers which allow water to escape the hull (water out, not in)...additionally, no water should get below the floor-deck, BUT there MUST be a bilge-pump in the bilge area below the floor deck to remove water that DOES get there...after all this IS the real world we live in... ;)

PROBLEMS: bad, leaking scupper-valves that don't contain/release water as they should...AND soaked, water-logged foam flotation below the floor-deck...as you have had hull repair that is allowing water to penetrate the hull, your flotation might be soaked and won't hold the scuppers above water-line any longer...

Think of your hull, between the floor-deck and the bottom of the boat as a big cork, foam filled between fiberglass boat bottom and fiberglass deck...works really good in keepin' all afloat...untill it sits in the water w/damage below the water-line that allows water to soak the foam...

If your scuppers are BELOW the water-line, this may be a problem...as I can't put my eyes on it, keep in mind this is only speculation, but it's a place for you to start lookin'... ;)

Rap 100% agree but noticed something you said and it is a question I have on mine, what one-way valve or flapper on the scupper/floor drain? Do you have them on yours? They are not on mine and I always thought that they should have been put there for that design. My floor sits above the water line etc. but each time the boat rocks up and down on the water it lets water in and then out.
Is there a one way valve you can install on our V20's?

I've heard great things about these. The best feature is, they are a bayonnet style. When you need to clean them, and you will, loosen a screw, twist a 1/4 turn, quick and easy. Other types (like Rabud's) you need to remove the whole assembly. That[s not good because don't want to upset the seal where they are mounted to the transom. Anywhere you have something screwed to your transom it's possible to get moisture/water in there and eventually cause rot. Make sure you seal the mounting screws properly.

Thanks for the help. My floor deck drain has simply a hose that is mounted under the deck, bends and then connects to the ouside portside of the boat. No ball scupper. Where does that ball scupper thing mount at ?
On the deck, or inside between the gunnels, or on the outside of teh boat ?
I found a picture of the boat in the water, and those drains are actually maybe an inch above the water line.I guess its the same as Willy, whenever the boat rocks, water will come in and hopefully go out again.
Both deck drain hoses appear to be to long and kinked real bad because they wont drain. Hopefully today I can squeeze in and yank one and go from there.
Feels like spring out today, cant give up a day like this to get some work done : )

Tin I've seen them before and asked guys about them but have been told they are for a certain type of deck drain hole. My V has scupper holes that are in the seam between transom wall and floor and these will not fit.
We need an in-line type of valve for the hose area or an external valve the attaches to the outside of the hull where the thru hull is.
I was on a bigger boat this past summer and looked down at the thru hull as it bobbed up and down on the water and it had a flap arrangement on it that let water out when it had positive pressure from inside boat like moving forward or when boat lifted thru hull up out of water while bobbing.
Thats what I want to install on Old School

Air thats the idea but those with the thin black rubber flapper are pretty fragile especially if it stays wet a lot. They also start deterioating fairly quickly.
They also jam pretty easily on small debris crap.
The ones I have been looking for have an actual strong plastic flap on the outside, found some once for a big boat and they were 5-6 inches across, need them for a smaller boat like our V's
