I think the impeller is...um....bad.
![]() How do I clean all the gasket crap off? ![]() What about that little seal thingy in the water tube housing? ![]() I am days away from ordering up my new upper gear box. In preparation for it, I decided to go ahead and break the cases apart. Since I had it apart, I went ahead and took the pump apart. I was going to go ahead and replace the impeller anywho, but dang, that thing looks bad. Now I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and replace the whole pump. How does the lower pump housing come out? I don't see any screws, and it don't move. |

I would try some acetone and a scotch brite pad. To get i clean, They sell the hole pump kit that will come with a new cover seal and all.

I was trying to save a few bucks, but then again, it's cheap in comparison. I don't mind getting a whole new pump, but how does that lower housing come off?

If you are talking about the white plastic part, it must pull up, but by the looks of the impeller I am guessing it got hot down there and it has seated it self real good!
See if the new pump comes with it before breaking it trying to get it out. I am not a Merc guy, so maybe someone that no's them better will chine in.

Looks like the upper gear box grenading has saved me an engine. Sheeze, I better triple check everything before splash down this spring. |

hey frayed, I had a little trouble with my water pump too. I gotta 170 I/O with a alpha one and i replaced the whole pump but still couldnt get any water through it, found all the broken pump blades hung down in the intake behind the intake screens. I took the phillip head screw out, opened it up and found a handful of rubber blocking the hole. I cleaned it out, works good now.

judging from the pictures, i would replace the upper and possibly the lower water pump housing, if the plastic looks like it has gotten hot, it could be warped, I've put new impellers in old housings only to have them heat, the lower doesn't look too bad, clean whats left of the gasket off of the surface, and inspect it for any signs of warpage. Look to see if there are any signs of lube leaking past the drive shaft seals( they come with the new lower housing)If the metal liner in the upper is grooved or not lined up in the housiing( the tab should be straight fwd) repalce the housing. Definately remove the water pick screens and clean out any left over impeller bits
