I will am almost ready to pour my new transom. Ater a few more hours, it should be clean down to the glass.
I will be glassing a additional 5" height to make this a 25" transom before I pour. The fiberglass and stringers are in good shape but I was wondering if anyone has any additional tips or suggestions regarding supports. I am not looking to invent anything but I wanted to ask before I pour. Thanks! |

By supports I'm guessing you mean something to keep the shape/thickness of the transom the same. I found that I didn't need much of anything. I used a few c-clamps at the top to keep the thickness uniform so my cap would go back on. Thats all that was needed. On the sides you can use some wood and duct tape to keep the resin in.

I was thinking of additional supports / gussets inside the boat back to the stringers due to the increased weight of the new poured transom. The weight increase may be negligible but I wanted to ask. I'll be raising the height of the transom also so I'll be adding some additional weight and leverage more than the normal rebuild.
Thanks for the reply Brielly. I checked out the pics from your rebuild earlier and used the idea of the steel pipe on the vacumn. Worked well! |

I elected to not raise the transom height due to added weight. Here is the pictures after the first pour. I am going to finish the rest with a second pour this week. I am going to drill several holes into the Arjay after it is set up so it forms a keyed fit for the second pour. I was attempting to do everthing at one time but there was no way I could block this with forms, It would have been a disaster. I had several small unseen cracks that leaked into the bilge and was a mess until it started to set up. After that mess I did not even attempt the forms and duct tape for the sides.
I am going to glass over the sides and drill several holes for venting air before the second pour. I will post final pics later. |

As for the holes its why I stress in previous post to seal it all using polyester resin and cloth from the inside this also adds additional strength to the skins . I am not sure what you meant by drilling holes to vent ? Use a steel rod (Home Depot use to hang drop ceiling ) to work the air pockets out if any. Be sure to use an electric drill to whip the Arjay to a thin and smooth consistency so the pour is nice and solid , use a rubber mallet and have a buddy tap the sides as you pour this works also. |

If you need extra support I would add knee boards on the inside of the transom skin and glass in.
You will be fine!! And I would add the 5"! You will not be sorry!

Spanishmak,
I used Arjay 6011 available from Fiberglass Services in FL. I used a combination of long drill bits, chisels and constant vacumning to remove the old plywood. Check out some of the information posted by Mauryc and Brielly. They have done a great job in posting the needed information. |
