Default Fishers Island Flukin 6/29

Well, I woke up at 4 am for some reason yesterday. *I was rolling over to go back to sleep but then it dawned on me.....time to go fishing. *I was at the marina by 5 am. *I headed out to Fishers Island, a small island where lots of super rich people have their summer homes. *It is just off the coast of Southeast Connecticut but is actually part of New York. *As such, I have to go by NY regulations when fishing there....4 keepers for fluke and a high minimum size of 19.5"

I got my line in the water around 5:30 am and could feel action right away. *Within a couple of minutes, wham! *First keeper in the boat. *Well, I was fishing two poles and after I pulled in a nice 22" I had to quit before 6:30 am as I hit my limit. *10 fish total and 4 nice keepers. *I was wishing I didn't keep the smallest of them, just over the minimum as the others were nice 22-23" flatties. *I was using fluke belly strips for bait.

Then, I came home and cleaned them. *Had to pick the kids up at soccer camp and we headed for the boat with grandparents who are visiting. *We all went out to the same spot and fished from about 2-5:30 pm. *The action was steady but lots and lots of shorts including many that would be keepers in CT (18-19.5"). *My stepfather in particular had several that were around 19". *With the reports I have heard of frequent spot checks out there it was not worth the chance. *Everyone got in on the action. *In the end my stepfather hooked in to a nice 23" 6 pound slab and we called it a day. *Only 4 keepers in the box but lots of fun. *I'd say we caught 2 dozen fish total. Fluke bellies again for bait on a standard rig except for one which was a Spro bucktail jig (3 oz) with a teaser about 2 feet behind it. Most fish took the teaser on this rig.

6 pounder

Whalenkm,

I heard about Fishers Island and our UPS driver (who has a V-20 also) told me about that spot. I plan on going out with him soon down that way to give it a shot. He also said when the weather gets rough/windy one side of the Island has protection and stays rather calm. Congrats on your catch and looks like you all had a blast. Way to go!

So between trying a trip with him, then with Sean. Then with Tally, and even perhaps even MacoJoe, I will have a good summer. LOL

We fished 30-55 feet but most fish were in the 40-50 foot range I think.

Shawsee, I'll see if I can get GPS coordinates for you....I marked a few spots. The Isabella Beach area is well known for a being a good fluke spot but I can't find a map with it marked on it. South Beach is another good spot, I am told.

Nice Fish Kevin. We are heading out in a few hours. We have to better coordinate our efforts.
