I'll take a stab at it. While we can be quite proud of how well our equipment works, example, reading bottom at 3500', it's really more about the sounder verifying what the chartplotter tells you at those depths. I've done alot of fishing in the mid-atlantic canyons and to be honest, I'm not much intrested in what I mark deeper than 300 and certainly no more than 500'. It is nice to have the power to define bait and fish at those depths (500' or so) which is the same power that allows you to track bottom to even deeper depths.
For offshore trolling, my primary tool is the chartplotter. I'm much more intrested in structure and contours to find biat / fish. Now, when I mark a school of tuna or a big bait ball suspended down 200' or so I'll be hanging around that area for a while, makeing multiple passes trying to raise those fish.
