You stated that the truck is a 1990 with no turbo or computer. I could be mistaken but I think they started turbos in 1985. I would ask if it is the original engine.

I have a 1997 and love it. Got 143,000 miles with little to no problem. As Skools siad they hold more oil, mine holds 14 quarts and factory reccomends oil cahnge every 5000 miles.
