Re: Fluke and Flounder
fluke and flounder look almost identical, fluke grow significantly larger.A good sized flounder [or flattie] is 3 lbs, don't know what the record is but most fish caught are not much more than 3lbs. There are 4 and 5 pounders, few and far between. Around here, Long Island, New York, flounder season starts mid march but they seem to show up a bit later as the years go by.This passed years flounder season was nothing to brag of. The beautiful white meat is delicious. Fluke show up here late may/ early june. Fluke are predators and have a pretty nasty set of teeth. A good size fluke is on average 5-6 lbs and they can get up towards 13-15 lbs, that's when they are referred to as a "doormat". Fluke meat is white and tender, sorta mild and delicious like flounder. As far as catching them, on the hook they are two different fish,a good size flounder does'nt have much of a fight were as a good size fluke does'nt give it up so easy.My personal best for flounder is close to 3lbs. and fluke, about 6.5 lbs. I ate both of 'em. MJ is the authority on the subject, I think he's caught thousands.
