Now for a real questions for the "God of Starboard"

I want to replace the forward and aft hatches on my 20.

They are 12 1/2 x 27 x 3/4 teak panel doors.

Q#1 - should I replace them with 3/4 or 1/2 starboard.
Q#2 - can I end drill 1/2 material - or is it too weak
Q#3 - Wat process do you use to get a smooth finish on the cut side? Do you sand, what grit or use router?
Q#4 - Any tips on working with starboard welcome - despite the wisecracks about commin' wirth no boat!
