If I can remember working on an older mercruiser...

The "normally open" desribes the type of switch. Most switches are either norm open or closed. The reverse inter-lock switch I believe cuts power to the trim unit when the shift linkage is engaged in reverse. You probably also have a shift-interupt switch which will cause you great joy at some point in the future. I kills the ignition system momentarily to make shifting easier. Until the switch fails or comes out of adjustment, at which time it just kills the ignition.
