I/Os VS OutBoards

lets start with the good things about i/os

i/os get good gas milage, their easier to repair, they can be made very large, you can have more power in a v-20 if you have an i/o, easier to repair because you can use auto parts, dont need to flush them when your don runnin them, they dont stress your transom to hang them you dont need an expensive braket to hang them, and they draw less water than the outboards. But take up deck space and if you have a fire theres a fire on the boat you have to check and change oil. they are much heavier than an outboard.

now outboards

they have better tork than an i/o, if you have a fire they are not toatily on the boat, can be toatily raised out of the water, dont take up space on the boat, are lighter than an i/o, and they are eaiser to replace than an i/o. But they are horrable gas hogs even for strokes they are louder they pollute the earth more thatn i/os and there exposed to everything you can bang them on docks and hurt them.

only thing that scares me about them is that seal that sometimes fails and lets water in lol...of course my overweight OB that sinks my scuppers aint no safer lol

o/b's are also more expensive to replace.

Auto parts are different from marine engine parts. Take for example the carb. Auto carbs when the float sticks and lets the fuel keep coming, dump the extra gas out side the carb while marine carbs dump it into the carb to flood out the engine and preventing a fire.

I was told this by a friend who paid TWICE as much to get the marine carb instead of an auto carb for his boat.

i used to have an old 350 from a suburban in my v-20 an auto engine so i could use auto engine parts.

According to SEA WORTHY magizine, I/Os are more likely to sink than O/Bs due to the boots that leak.

Marine engines are built to run at higher RPMs since they don't have transmissions.

hey fishbone, if you use an auto cam in your marine engine, the exhaust will suck water back in to the motor.

There is another prime example of the many differences between marine and auto engines.

she sure was fast though i could pass anything on the water. and my exaust was mouned on the transom above the water so she sounded like a muscle boat so i didnt need to worry about that.
