Stator question
I was winterizing my engine and noticed a little black goo had dripped a little onto the timing base. It’s my understanding that this is a failing stator. My engine seems to charge ok and my tach isn’t erratic. I do have an issue where I can’t get above 5100 rpms, not sure if it could be related. The engine is a 98 200 Johnson.

I highly doubt it has anything to do with it. It's the charging system side that drips out, the ignition charge coil, and S.L.O.W. coils are part of the stator, but sealed seperately. And these aren't like Mercs with a low speed and a high speed charge coil, they use just 1 coil to charge the CDI unit, and another coil for the S.L.O.W. system that controls the rev limiter and other safety functions. I had a stator fail on me once, engine ran great all the way up to the 6700 limiter, but it started like crap and would randomnly lose cylinders at idle, but all came right back to life once I gave it some throttle. If you're getting 225 volts during craking, your stator is most likely fine.

Ferm beat me to it, they all do that. I knew a tech that would replace every stator he saw that was leaking, he made a lot of money till he started charging for ones he just replaced:bat:

Thanks ferm, I kind of figured that. It’s only dripping a little and I have none of the symptoms of a failing one.

All of the 35 amp stators leak after 2-3 years, just how they are. The only thing you do need to watch for is that the black goop doesn't get into the timer base, and cause it to stick. I've seen that happen which will make it run poorly up top because the timing wouldn't fully advance. Otherwise, don't worry about it.
And me and Jersey don't mix. My wife has tried MANY times to get me to move, it aint happenin. |
I thought Florida was now part of New Jersey?
