outboard gods , need help

having a fuel problem, tell me what you guys think:

motor: 94 150 Merc 2.0
symptoms : bogs down on take off. intermitent might do it once out of 5 take offs

what i have done so far: changed fuel pump checked all fuel lines and tightened
checked filter

i concentrated on the fuel delivery because the ball would be empty. but the fp took care of that, now the ball remains hard. would a carb problem cause this symptom? the motor is 18 years old (1400 hrs)and i have never had the carbs off.

Carb cleaning would be my guess.

Sound to me like a float is sticking or possibly trash in the bowl.

It wouldn't hurt to clean the carbs, and make sure and put new kits in them when you do it. New carb kits should have viton needle and seat sets(grey tips) in them where as the older sets had neoprene needle and seats(orange or red tips). The viton holds up to ethanol much better than neoprene does.

additional info, about 6 weeks ago, the tach started reading funny, but i would tap it and it would read normal. then it got where that would not work. if i turned it off and back on, it go to normal. i replaced the tach, no change. i swapped the tach lead on the voltage regulators, no change. charging voltage is fine 12.9 idle. & 14.1 running. anytime i have had a tach issue, stator is soon to follow, could this cause the bogging down?

i will do the carbs, with merc oem kits..

Yes, a failing stator will cause all kinds of issues. MERCURY uses a 2 sided stator with a low side and a high side. It's right around 2500-3000 where the stator changes over I believe.

I would bet on ther stator going bad
