Lettin the cat out of the bag
Well I guess I'll let the cat out of the bag. Sorry no pictures yet, but I bought an 89 HYDRA-SPORTS 2000CC. It is in pretty decent shape overall, but needs a little work. Unfortunately a previous owner decided to cut the fuel tank hatch cover at the center console instead of tilting the console and removing it in one piece when the tank was replaced. Also the last owners mechanic was NOT someone who should be wrenching on a JOHNNY-RUDE. It has 200HP JOHNNY-RUDE looper on it, year unknown.
It has a 98 clamp bracket, and the engine is mostly a 88-92 style(serial number leads me to 92, but it only has the serial number like it was a reman powerhead). He had just had a new power pack and the flywheel magnets glued back in. WEll the quikstart didn't work at all, and it wouldn't start without a battery charger hooked up to it. The stator in it was JUNK, and all 6 magnets fell out when I pulled the flywheel(the last mechanic used fiberglass body adhesive to install the magnets:bat:). So much for the last owners idea of turn key ready. Unfortunately I took the guys word and didn't sea-trial it first(I know my mistake). So the flywheel is in the shop with the epoxy curing on the magnets, and I installed the new stator already($357:cen:). Called the last owner and reminded him of his turn key statement, and his answer was "Well I felt it was fine when it left my yard, so it's your problem now":nut:. So DON'T EVER take a sellers word, verify it for yourself first. I'll try and remember to take some pictures tommorrow. Anybody want a really nice flats boat? |
Congrats on the boat!!
I am sure no matter what you will have her ship shape in no time!! |
yeah we know you got it. that was the one BGA asked you to check out for him lol. BGA called about it and found out you bought it. good luck. by the way i think in legal stuff you could sue for misrepresentation
|
Sorry to hear about the needed repairs. How much for the flats boat?
|
injoy the new ride :sun:
|
I got a little over $10K in my flat's boat, but know i won't ever get it out of it. I told BGA about this one a few weeks back, but then he was outa the hunt. He E-mailed me about to go look at it about 2 hours after I had told the guy I would buy it. My other half fell for it harder than I did, so she said buy it. So I did. I am a bit ticked about the $500 in the engine so far for a supposed rebuilt engine that needed nothing, but in his defense he did have receipts for all of the work. His mechanic told him it was normal to need 2 batteries to make the engine turn over fast enough to start:bat:. 91 volts port and 94 volts starboard aint enough juice to make 1 kick off very well. Hopefully it will be better tommorrow. I should have known somethin was amidst though when I started it and it was smokin so much and idling low, but figured it was just excess oil in the carbs from sitting and gas evaporating out. I know my 140 does it when I let it set. I'll find out tommorrow, although the epoxy did feel dry when I checked it earlier? Nah, I'll let it dry overnight.
NADA on my flats boat is roughly $10,640 average retail not including trailer, push pole, and the platform. |

2 part 5 min epoxy from Lowes will hold them in better than OMC crap. plus much cheaper and are you talking about the magnets location in the flywheel? those outside magnets don't have a set location they don't matter only the center core magnet ring matters. the outside 6 are only charging for the battery and the coils. the center times the motor. the outside 6 only need an even gap at each point. oh and you actually don't need glue. they make a plastic snap in ring that holds the magnets in place forever no glue and never a worry of loose ones again.
|
I looked for the plastic ring, but go figure can't find one when i need it. The center magnet for the timing is fine. The outers is what fell out. One was broken as well. I already got em glued back in and setting up. The stuff they included in the package seems like some pretty good stuff. It's already set up pretty hard. I know the stuff that came with the replacement magnet I got was different than the stuff he sold in the old OMC packs. And my problem was low voltage to the charge coil, pick-up coils had good output to the pack.
And the marks I was talking about had to deal with the linkage on the carbs. I can't get over how some people set these things up with the butterfly's slightly opened, and then retard the timing back to make them idle. I line up the marks and set them like my CLYMER says, and they all run like a top. |
oh yeah or better yet people have one bank of carbs slightly open and the others shut lol get them carbs in sync lol.

Good luck with the new work, ah I mean boat Ferm. Seems like everyone I ever got myself had an issue or three to take care of.
Part of their charm you know:bsflag: |

I'm still working some ghosts out tof the machine, but hopefully all will be well soon. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...RA-SPORTS7.jpg |
looks pretty good bud:clap:

Well I hope i got the last bugs figured out on the engine now. My new power pack will be in in the morning. It would be my luck to have a bad stator and power pack at the same time. I couldn't get all six to fire on start-up, and the quikstart wouldn't activate. So after testing the stator again to verify it was good, I finally put the fact that it has a newer pack on it already out of my head and tested the pack. Sure enough it is shot. I was getting 91 and 97 volts before from my stator, so figured that's why I didn't have good fire. I have 150 now, and am still only getting 80-90 on 5 of the pugs, but 125 to #1. I hope the pack fix's the other engine problems, not being able to use my new toy is pissing me off:cen:. Not to mention that all of this just adds fuel to the fire regarding the guy that sold me the boat and said it was turn key:bat:.
|
nope not the stator. lol you did as others spent extra money that motor has sat. you just needed to disconnect the timing /trigger from the advance rod, take the plugs out, have someone turn it over and you work the timing base back and forth very fast. you will see the plugs all start to fire. i've had several and seen several V6 usually motors do that. very common issue and everyone buys a new stator then power pack then a crank trigger lol only needed to work the one they had lol. good luck. running the motor will not fix it , you must work that trigger back and forth to fix it.
|
nice lookin rig there ferm, if ya need a hand scrubbin her up i'll be down next flight outta atlantic city.......let me know
|
It was firing fine once it was running, it was getting it to run. Before stator replacement I had 0 volts on the QUIKSTART/SLOW coil, and 91 and 95 on the charge coils with the pack disconnected. I now have 200 volts coming out of the charge coils, And 18 out of the QUIKSTART/SLOW coil. So it did need the stator, but unfortunately the power pack still wouldn't go into QUIKSTART mode, and would only ocasionally fire all of the plugs on start-up. I pulled the pick-up coil off and made sure all was well with it before replacing anything, it was just bad luck I guess:cen:.

I just put the new power pack on it, and voila. It all works now:sun:. I have my quikstart working now, and the fast idle on start-up really helps. It starts so much easier than my 140 does:clap:.

Wooohooo! That's great Ferm.
 |
nice boat Ferm. Now that it's running good, when is the maiden voyage?
