Anybody interested in a Hydraulic steering install writeup?

I think I'm going to install hydraulic steering on the V and was wonderiing if you guys would want me to do a writeup? I'll probably pull the trigger on it this week. I may wait until after the boat show...you know, just to make sure I still have the V. If so, I may have to wait for Kevin to swing my Merc out of the way and hang that new Opti...:sun:

Oh, forgot to tell you guys...I've been pretty absent lately due to my new JOB keeping me super busy:happy:

My 250 Sportsman has hydraulic steering, when we bought the boat it was effortless to turn the motors but it slipped. I put hydraulic oil in and now it doesn't slip but is not as effortless. Could that be because of air in the lines? Before i put fluid in, the fluid was below the valves. Is anybody planning to have the power hydraulic steering installed?

Air

I have hyd steering on my 91 V-20 I/O. I love it. Mine came with it when I bought it. If you need Pics, let me know and I'll shoot whatever you need to look at.

Thanks for the offer GNC. I've installed a couple of these before, so I got it pretty well covered.

my motor had to come off the boat to get the old steering off . thats what i was told anyway.

Airslot 02-10-2008 11:27 PM

Yep, motor has to come off, or cut the cable into short pieces :bat:. Mine needs to be raised two holes anyway, plus I am working a possible deal on an Optimax...we'll see what happens:drool:

unless you have big trips its a waste of money IMO. i seastar is plenty smooth a easy to turn alone.

we don't use hydraulic power assist on anything under 40 feet(not to be confused with power assisted cable steering), Unless you are installing an autopilot, you won't need it on a V

C YENSEN 02-12-2008 03:43 PM

Optimax.....no E-tec:head:

Airslot 02-12-2008 06:12 PM

No Etec service around here, and one of the top merc in the region is down the street from me...what would you do???

I'm probably gonna wait till fall as it stands anyway. The hydraulic steering is gonna happen first chance I get.
