MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
Well I got the windshield from Axe (thanks again Axe!!) the other day and it goes on totally different then mine.
Mine had a piece of metal that bolted down to the boat with a piece that went into the side of the windshield to hold it down. The new one has a track under the frame with T bolts, you never see a screw after the install. Problem is finding the T bolts?? They need to be a flat square head and no more then 8mm or 3/16 dim bolt. Guess what there is no such animal in any hardware store or boat place! *>:( So I had to make my own, after playing for a while I used 1/4 SS Carriage bolts. I used my grinder and squared the head off, then ground the shank of the bolt to 3/16 or so till it fit in the hole and slide on the track. I just finished making all the bolts, Now I am off to scrape the old caulking off the boat from the old windshield, then will fit the windshield to see if I have to fill the old holes or will the new windshield cover them? Will have pic's later today. |
Re: MJ's windshield repair
Sounds like every project for me,
whether it be on the boat or my house, I always end up fabricating something cause what I need or want is not available. Go to it MJ.. |
Re: MJ's windshield repair

Re: MJ's windshield repair
Hey MJ, now that I see the bolts you made,
wouldn't water closet flange bolts have worked? |

The only problem there is that the bolts are to big, and I am not sure they are SS? But the oringal wasn't SS either and were on there for 30 years. I just want the thing to last a life time!! I have no idea why?? As long as it makes it to the end of the drive way its the new onwers problem ;) Well all the holes are filled and I added some paint to seal the F27, I will be puttibng the windshield up there in a little while. More pic's to come. |
Re: MJ's windshield repair

Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
OUTSTANDING JOB!
No signs of blood or scalp anywhere! ;D You know if I bought my wife new boobs, I would at least play with them a little while before getting rid of her. :-* Keep the boat MJ. The last experiance is just battle scars. And God what stories everytime your in it. |
Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
Nice job MJ. I say keep it too, you can remove the dog house and it will be just like having a new bigger boat w/ more room.

Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!

Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
MJ has a daughter too.
HAMMER, water closet bolts are the bolts that hold the toilet to the sewer flange, they go through the wax seal. |

Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
Here's another "keep it" vote coming at you from NC.
I personally think you're gonna be sorry when you see how much your fuel bill increases due to going with a bigger boat...not just fuel in the boat but in the truck too..but I do understand why you want to do it. Looking good - nice work on the repair and glad you got her all fixed back up. ;) |

No wait, I think I would do that the other way around....cleaning my foot last. :D ;D ;) 8) |
Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
I agree with Blue, bigger fuel bill is coming your way if you sell. Great repair job. Now keep the V. ;)

Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
But in MJ's case, he is a flukin machine so if he's able to fluke more and fill that big old cooler up ($400 haul per trip) then I guess he can afford it! I wish I could sell fish like my grandpaw did back in the 80's. :'( :(

Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
Thanks guys!!
I was on a friends 21 foot Contender yesterday, has a 2004 Yamaha 200 hp, Let me tell you this thing is a dream!! Never even fell the bumps in the water, it was thew most comfy ride I have ever had! Fished the same areas I fish all the time and with 3 onboard at the end of the day we used 21 gal gas were I would use 18. I would gladly trade for 3 gal gas!! Of coarse he is the old lady of the water, he never goes over 4500 RPM curz at 20 something. |

Ya'll catch any? |
Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
MJ, consider the events that are prompting you to sell? Now what if you stuff the bow of the 'tender into the same wave? I love contenders, but your not really moving up per say?

Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
I think I can speak for MJ as we've discussed this many times. He's been thinking of this move long before this traumatic event took place. It's more about comfort in the ride than size.
I'm a very big fan of the V20 platform otherwise I wouldn't be here. Now you guys with the V20 cuddy surely have to admit that these boats can tend to pound a bit. The forward cuddy coupled with the wetted hull surface (I'm talking about the chines and strakes) make for a dry ride, but what makes it a dry ride along with a moderate deadrise also makes for a rough ride. As I've always said, everything, and I mean everything in boat design is a tradeoff. You can't please everyone, and there is no such thing as a perfect boat. There will always be one feature that you really love about a particular boat that you love, but generally comes at the cost of another feature being sacrificed. I think the V20 is one of the better values in a used boat that you can come up with. Not many others in it's class can come close in overall features. But, again, it's not the boat for everyone. The waters that MJ fish in really dictate a different boat. That doesn't mean that he couldn't continue to fish the V20 for years to come. It just means that he could continue to fish those waters in a bit more comfort as in a softer ride. That softer ride can be acheived with more deadrise in a similar size, more length to bridge the chop, more weight to push through, or many other factors. The V20 has served MJ well, but if he can get himself into a more comfortable ride, I think he'd be happier. The trick will be to find the right boat that has all the right compromises in design to work for him. The search goes on. ;D |
Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
yes I'm hijacking here. Hey Chum, still have that bracket lying around taking up space. ::) ::) ::) ::)

Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
Hmmmm. That depends. You up for a wrestling match with MJ? I've got a kiddie pool filled with Jello and MJ has some special attire for you to wear. :o ;D
|
Re: MJ's windshield repair Is DONE!!
CB said it great! I never said I was wanting bigger, just better. but most of the time you go bigger to get there.
I love that contender, but I don't have $25K to get one either!! Hammer stay away from my bracket!! I might just have to by a I/O and that will be my bracket for the conversion when the time comes ;D You waited to long, you snooze you lose :P |
