What's your winter " to do" list for the V ?

Besides the winterizing and trailer hub re packing, I've just got a few ideas:

1. Convert front port seat from fixed facing forward to swivel.

2. Enhance snaps on side curtains to avoid risk of flapping / tearing when trailering.

3. caulk bottom of hull rub rail -because I believe it's a possible source of water intrusion
when waves are banging up against the hull.

4. re install cuddy door lock, and move hinge/door hook in to catch just a little easier.

...........and maybe some other things.

switch from beer to Bourbon

GREYWOLF 12-15-2013 06:05 PM

good plans. I am purchasing some items for when it warms up too install. So come april 15 I am in my slip, I hate this waiting for spring ! I envy the boy's down south, time to hibernate

Well20F 12-15-2013 07:15 PM

Hey GW
It was only 70degrees in south Alabama on sat. a little chilly LOL.

phatdaddy 12-15-2013 08:56 PM

gonna try to use it more this winter. we always slack off between thanksgiving and christmas. and i usually use feburary as my trailer rebuild month and feb as my boat project month. i do have a battery isolator switch i need to install. been running it 15 years with no switch, so you know how high on the list that project is

lathehand 12-16-2013 08:17 AM

Remove and refinish the teak

Destroyer 12-16-2013 09:46 AM

Change the spin on fuel filter. (The old one is getting a bit corroded) The new one has a petcock on the bottom to release any accumulated water. :head:

Go to a dual battery system on the V21. Right now it's just a single and I like the idea of a second battery. Investigate a solar panel recharging system and see if it's feasible. :sun:

Upgrade the front bilge pump from a 750 to a 1200. (The main is a 2000).

Choke on the cost of an enclosure for the V21 :cen: and decide to get one "next year" .

Switch from Bourbon to Rum.

This. Except they're both perpetually on my "to drink" list, along with egg nog (home made) for the next few weeks.

I have to figure out why the ol' PD is listing to port. As soon as we get through the holidays. And the egg nog.

Destroyer I've used one of these on my boat for years http://www.harborfreight.com/15-watt...-68692.htmland never had a dead battery.

Lathehand, thanks for the info. Unfortunately that unit is no longer available. Not to worry, the panels themselves are relatively cheap. My question was did they put out enough to keep a battery charged, and you answered that with your comment about using one for years. So again, thank you for the info.

Whups.... Guess it's still available if you enter the correct info.... it's a 1.5 watt solar panel, not a 15 watt. My bad. Actually, that unit looks like a good thing to use for my garden tractors and some other items that sit for long periods of time. Reading the reviews it's great at maintaining a fully charged battery. I may just buy a few of them. Again, thanks for the link :

Finish Work on the trailer
remove fuel tank
Rewire the boat
Treat the wood trimming.

cfelton 12-16-2013 11:35 PM

I'd like ta strip the old ablative paint off the bottom and see what it looks like under it. Maybe if theres any money left after Christmas a new full enclosure. Really depends on the weather cause It won't fit in the garage.

Well20F 12-16-2013 11:36 PM

Destroyer,
Maybe I could build a t top out of solar panels and keep the bats charged and run a electric motor no fuel cost LOL

Actually I already have (2) 2' x 3' solar panels, each producing 13.5+ volts. A 6 square foot panel is .557 square meters. The amount of energy from the sun that hits 1 square meter is between 1100 and 1400 watts, so lets say 1200 watts average.... that's 670 watts per panel. Most panels are between 15% and 20% efficient, so lets say 18% average, that's 120 watts. (This is peek power when the sun is at high noon). For a whole day on the water I should get between 4 and 6 hours of peek watts so, at 5 hours that is 600 watt-hours or .6kw-hr per panel. X2 = 1200 watt-hours, or 1.2 kw-h total. More than enough to recharge the batteries, run LED lights, fish finders, radio, etc. All I really need is the "t" top to mount them to. Been kicking this one around for a while now. I have a radar arch already, but maybe I get rid of that and get a "t" top for the solar panels and the radar.... Or maybe I add to the radar arch to make it into a "t" top and add the panels to that? :head:

Destroyer, let me get some pictures of the arch/top my freind just built for a 20 Bertram, it may give you some good ideas

...........but not enough power to keep the on board hot tub warm ?
I'll guess you're an engineer by trade.

captpete13 12-18-2013 07:58 PM

I want to replace my transom mount transducer with a tilted element,(so it doesn't kick up at speed). Replace my transom drain tubes. Compound/wax,clean etc.

Replace floor

Last year I got the engine running great.

This year: New floor, new dash, rewire...

That should keep me busy.

Starting the floor tomorrow!

SkunkBoat 12-20-2013 10:50 PM

did a lot with the gunnels this year, now I'm thinking I should tackle that 30 year old transom....ooooh ...I went and said the T word!

no wiggle in it but the bottom where the transducers have been mounted over the years is definitely soggy.

thinking about cutting just enough of the cap to get at it and dig it out and fill it with Arjay.
problem is, once I cut, I have to paint to make it look good....project creep....

reality is I should skip a summer of fishing and become one of those old dudes who works on his boat all the time.

A boat needs the same attention as a woman right down to the last penny!!!!:oh:

Don't do it man. If it ain't broke don't fix it. If the top of the transom is good just let it go. Unless you have somewhere indoors to work on it doing a transom outside during the winter would suck. It would be really bad to miss a season of fishing.

spareparts 12-21-2013 03:22 PM

revise my statement about switching to Bourbon, its 80 degrees here today, were going back to beer and if it gets any warmer, I'm pulling the cover off the pool

I think a boat needs more attention than a woman.........A boat usually runs more consistenly than a woman anyway. Oops, did I say that ...

you can walk away from a boat and it won't cost you a dime:zip:

bradford 12-24-2013 03:36 AM

Need to finish up a few small things, but those small things add up.

-Get my back to back lounge seat back from the upolstery man

-install hatch latches in my new hatch covers

-install nav lights, thinking about some shark eyes port and starboard

-see Spareparts pics of this Bertram 20 he's talking about with the new top his friend built and consider throwing more money down the hole

-think about installing I-command guages

-buy and install a garmin chartplotter/depth sounder and vhf radio

-install new teak trim in the cuddy

-put new trailer lights on to keep someone from crashing the etec

-think about how everyone who has trim tabs raves about how great they are and cringe when I think about drilling into my new virgin transom

-Take her out on the nice days!!

Genie Aye 01-16-2014 02:58 AM

Bradford--

Do the I command gauge and get the chip for the gauge-I feel best insurance for that E-tec-it allows several more options on the gauge--trim tabs, fuel gauge etc--it allowed me to take several gauges out and put my 5" chartplotter in my dash.

I am rewiring after replacing the old glass fuse holder behind the dash with ato fuse panel with 15 power sources--can shorten my wire runs for accessories, maybe a new dash panel if I get carried away and got to figure out why my running lights are blowing the fuse. All running lights are led, but think it might be the new tilt up light on the radar arch--to tight going thru the top hole in the arch--oh well, did 4hat one to myself.

Maybe even work on the side storage boxes.

Repair/replace throttle.
Secure seat at helm to floor.
Bolt the hinges to floor hatch with nylabolts or threadsealer.
Clean and oil teak trim.
Tach isn't reading accurately, determine cause and repair/replace.
Power wash and paint bottom.
Clean, polish & wax hull.

Welcome to the site Diver. We love boat porn here so if you have some pics of your boat we'd love to see them. But in all cases, welcome aboard.

Trip over the hull, been using the overturned hull to hide parts for my mud quad build.

The cap is on scaffolding right now. Using the cap to hang quad parts for paint.

And I have also been using the trailer for painting parts. Mounted the tongue jack onto the trailer rail and turnt it into a coil spring compressor.
