Willy's Screwed
Well guys, took my brother and friend out flukeing. Caught a couple of nice keeps and then the drift died.
Decided to move outside the bay and run down a few miles to a spot I know. Cruising along running like a top. Then a sudden loss of ower and a loud hard knock. Shut her down right away, pulled the engine cover off, got a hole in the block big enough to put a ping pong ball thru. Just got done putting close to a grand into all the maintenance on this engine which had now 215 hours on it. 96 Evinrude 200. Screwed. Got towed in for an hour and a half by TowBoat. |
Ouch!!! Truly sorry my friend... Will keep my eyes peeled for a new engine for you.
|
sorry to hear that willy, i have a friend who works on outboards and he says there is no rhyme or reason why or when they blow. they are all hand grenades just waiting to go off. run it on down to skools and let him have at it.
|
That just plain sucks.
|
Oh man Willy that sucks.....really sorry to hear that. I know how much time (and dollars) you've spent getting it all tip top.....
|
willy, that is terrible news, so sorry to hear that....especially after recent work done. Any clue as to the failure?
|
Oh man! That's terrible news Willy. I'm so sorry to hear that. I have that same year motor, but the Johnson version with around 400 hours on it.
Were you premixing? If not, could have been the VRO pump failing. That same thing happened to me on my maiden voyage a few years back with the Wellcraft 250 that I eventually sold to Skools. Was cruising along nicely and same thing as you; heard that knock and engine had shut down. Pulled the hood and found a big hole in the block. My stomach dropped down to my feet. |
You want Reel to swing by on his way to NJ and pick up that 89 200 sitting in my back yard?
|
Man that blows willy!!!!! Sorry for your troubles.
|
What the? I hate that. I purchased a rebuilt 200 Merc thet let go twice, no windows in the block. Even had a Merc Master Tech put it on the dyno to get the jetting right, timing, the whole 9 yards.. We sized it up right to make sure it was ready the second time. Still stuck a piston at WOT after 20 hours breakin time. Never put a finger on it, gut tells me a bad carb. I feel your pain, bad stuff happens to good folks.
Sometimes sharing the carnage helps to lessen the blow. You will be back to riding in no time. No hill for a climber... |
Sucks. Sorry to hear that.
|
No idea what happened, every thing was running like a top.
No smoke, no noises until running at normal cruise about 3800 rpm and then splat. I would think where the hole is I threw a rod. ByGrace that is the same thing you had I guess. Now I have a big quandary, put a new motor on costing 14-18 thousand for a big block four or two stoke. On a fifteen year old boat? that even after I do it will only be worth about 10 grand. Take a chance on another used engine that I know nothing about? for who knows how much. Or spend thousands getting this one with a new power head rebuilt? I like the new idea but really can't afford it. I'm not a happy camper right now that is for sure. |
Willy, yep, my motor threw a rod right through the case.
Hey, what about buying a motor from Skools? |
JUST DAYUM, really hate that for you man.
|
DAYUM Willy! So sorry brother!
|
Willy...man I feel bad for you right now...gut-wrenching to be sure...but I know you'll dig in and find the right solution...
If you want that 200 that Spare mentioned, I'll bring 'er up to you... Hey MJ...what became of the Yam you took off yours recently?...that was a pretty good motor and shouldn't be too heavy for Willy's boat... MJ does have a certain knack for comin' up w/some good used OBs... The best thing about new...WARRANTY!!... You'll be throttlin' up soon...I'm pretty sure about that... |
Bummer, hope you get back running soon and inexpensively...
These things should happen late september.... rkc |
Willy:
I found this on EBAY http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-...ssoriesQ5fGear not new, but a heck of a lot cheaper. |

|
Depressing news. Good luck getting back on the water in good time.
Were you pre-mixing or using the VRO pump? |
Uppsss!!! so sorry Willy!!!
Now you know what I mean with "very bad damage", almost the same happens to me. Regrds Tony |
it's a hard call , but i was in the same boat 18 years ago. i bought my 83 v-20 for $6500 in 1990 and the motor went south in 93. at that time a 150 mariner was $6350 and i couldn't stand the thought of sinking that much in that boat at the time. we went 1 summer of me patching the old one and looking for a rebuild deal and missed a lot of boating. my wife finally said either get rid of the boat or buy a new motor and quite whining. it was the best thing i ever did(besides marrying a water lover). if your trying to justify it ecomonically, get out of boating. as i type this i realize my "new" motor is 17 years old.
my dad always told me" if the only complaint you have about something is the price, you got a deal." |

a friend bought and did a Seacraft over and wanted it so i swapped hil a 2003 yanaha HDPI 200, 660 hours for it plus $3k so far so good!! i will keep my eyes open for ya!!!! |
willy, I hate to hear that. Been looking at identical motors since it happened.
They ranged from "$2500 rebuilt/bored" to "$2500-$3500 good clean engine". The powerheads rebuilt alone been running $3000 plus shipping plus core charge. Hate to hear it willy. |
Bummer, I know the feeling mine did the same bloody thing a few years ago only no block damage.
If you see anything used in the Orlando area let me know I can check it out for you. If you like a rebuild power head try Vaun at http://www.powerheadexchange.com let him know Andrew sent you and give you a good deal and quality workmanship, I can pick it up in Tampa bring it to Orlando check with my contact (Freight between FL & NY) or crate it up for you and ship...its the most I can do for a good man ...Good luck and keep us posted.. |
Need to find out what happened first Willy. If it broke a reed valve theres a chance it just windowed the block and can be patched up. I've seen a few of em with windowed blocks welded back up without even pulling the powerhead(depending upon where it went through). Reed valves breaking is unfortunately fairly common and why I won't run metal reeds in any engine I build up. I've got Bradfords old engine here at the house I could build up for yeah if you want. It lost a cylinder from carbon build-up and stuck a ring. She isn't purty, but I could fix yeah up fairly cheap.
|
Willy, what a bummer man. If there is anything I can do to help out just let me know. My marina is selling a pair of Yamaha f225's from a repower. I can see if they would sell one to you if your interested.
|
Wow, Mack Ferm Pete and all you guys are great. Cheered me up just seeing the responses. I needed that.
I will look close by first and see if there are any good deals at hand. Money is a little tight right now so I got to do whats going to give me the best return. Spent some time with Ozzie on the phone and as usual when I talk to him between us things get a little clearer. I got to decide first am I going to keep FishBones for the next several years. If I am, going to try to find the newest I can find for the best price. If I do decide I am going to sell her within a year or two then I am going for used or rebuilt power head. |

At this time I feel obligated to point out that conversation took place BEFORE Happy Hour began... |

And your recollection is good!!...we just didn't have that opportunity before us this time...possibly soon!!... |
Thanks Aussie, you are right on the money with that statement.
And Oz I hope so. Still debating and shopping locally, nothing yet. |
Dang Willy.....I really hate to hear of your busted motor.
I have to say, having a brand new mill on the transom really is a nice way to go.....no worries at all. Of course that was a while back for me.....2003....but the feeling lasted for a long time and I felt it was money well spent. Most of your new motors have 6 year warranties these days. But I understand the trepidation.....motors are about twice the price now then they were in 03. |
hey Willy, this will give you an idea of what a new one is costing
http://www.boats.net/outboard_motor/...0HP/parts.html |
Yea Dave those are pretty much what I am seeing up here. 17-19 G's by time you are installed and out the door, with NJ sales tax.
Wow prices have gone up unbelievable. Looks like it is the used motors for me. Unless Ozzie can float me a loan! |
