Well, today I am going to go talk to two local Marina's and see what type of deal I get get on either a 90hp E-Tec or 2 stroke Yannaha (the Yammaha dealer also sells Merc, so they might come into play)
I'm done stressing over a 20 year old engine and really just want to get out on the water with confidience in my rig (though I am really stressing know on the $$$$$$$$ side of it) I'm leaning towards the E-Tec so I'm going tho the Yammaha dealer 1st and see what type of numbers we come up with then cross the bridge to the E-tec dealer..
As always, any advise on either of these engines is welcome and apreciated.

well congrats for making the decision to go look. My only suggestion would be to go with more horsepower than a 90.:head:

My neighbor asked what I thought about the motor type on his new rig. My responce was, "it dosen't matter what I think, the warrenties will give you more piece of mind than other peoples opinions, you have so many years that it ain't gonna be your problem".
Opinion; Everything considered, I like Etec.
But affording any new motor is beyond my wallet.

CY, All I need is a 90hp, I've been working out all winter and got some oars off a old Whaling Schooner:hi: Actually, I sold the V and bought a 18FT sTEIGER cRAFT cc
TSBAKI, I hear you, I hope to sign up for a 100 year finance plann:zip:

Sean even with the 18 CC Steiger I would go at least a 115 in which ever engine you choose. Difference in fuel economy will be negligable but the available power will be much better loaded up for all day fishing with two or three people. Both are great engines so you won't go wrong. I would lean towards the ETEc especially in the smaller engines because of the torque made by the two stroke.

Sean, have you run the boat with the current 75? I know the V-18 is a sweet ride with a 115, but I don;t know how the Stieger compares to a V-18.

Where's Stinky Thong when ya need him?

ok,ok...i found the thread about the pup and the boat. nice lab, plenty of fund dog years ahead of you. so why did you sell the V? and didn't you buy a little 14 footer last fall?

Sean

I personally have not run it with the current Merc75 (I am sort of affraid of the engine:zip:) but the gentleman I purchased it from sad it ran the boat fine, upto 30mph on his GPS. So, since I am not looking to win any races, just be able to power out the the hole and back I figured the 90 would do OK?
The V was sold because I was almost stuck in a bad place financially, but every thing worked its way out so know I am looking to put my self back in a bad place???
Yes, I did get a 11ft wood skiff last year that I cleaned up and got a nicve 4hp Jouhnson for. I might sell it, but I am not sure.
Its turning into a pain in the A$$$$ to find some one to finance only $10,000.00, every one has a $25,000.00 min....

Congrats Sean!! You should be able to get $700 - $1000 for that old merc. That'll take care of a few months of etec bills.

You and me too pal. My '86 Yamaha is original to the boat and while it runs strong and pushes the boat pretty well I know my shift rod is on borrowed time and the fact that it only drinks premium gas got me thinking. The current motor is rated @220HP so I'd be in the market for a 225-300HP. Weight isn't a concer for me as the Sportsman 250 was shipped from the factory with up to twin I/O's in the rear.

Anybody got a handle on real world pricing on motors in this range? For some reason a Suzuki 250HP or 300HP catches my fancy. Any ideas what new controls etc. add to the total cost?

I have a 89 225 Evinrude, runs great and the suzy's are the best price, but not sure on the best bang for the buck? Weight for me also is no problem, I run 23 Sea Ox

etecs are sweet MJ, but I know two fellows I see at the dock sometimes when we launch, they have the big Suzzies and they both have had others and they swear by them. Say they are the best all around engines they ever had. One of them has had it for three years now.

I just scored a deal on a 2001 Merc 90 hp four stroke with 100 hours on it for $2500 + another $150 for controls, gauges, wiring, cables, etc.
the guy is delivering it to MJ's house tomorrow morning.
I know it's not going to be stinky and loud like Ferminator likes, but it should be a nice match for my little ProLine. As long as the weight of the beast doesn't sink my boat. Right MJ? :bat::nut:

"long as the weight of the beast doesn't sink my boat. Right MJ?" Are you reffering to the engine or MJ... :you:
Nice Find CB, $2500.00 would be allot easier to hide from the misses the 9000.00:zip: I just put down $1,300.00 on the etec and financed the rest, 120.00 a month with no prepayment penelties. Engine whould be in Westport MA (Purchased from FL Tripp & Sons.. great guys so far) in a week and on the boat before May...
CB, any pics of the Proline??

Yup. It had a crack in it, but MJ decided to drive close to 80mph and that was the end of the windshield. I have a new one being made as we speak. I found a place close to my house that makes them. Should be done next week. $160 and better made than original.

it wasn't that hard, i bought the plexi, got my measurements, made a few refernce marks(leave the paper on the plexi) on the first bend to see how much it streched when I bent it. I made a "brake" by using two 2x4s in a vise. Just clamped one 2x on each side of the reference line for the bend. I warmed the area for the bend with a heat gun(keep it only on the area you want to bend), I kept it going back and forth while putting pressure on it till it started to move, don't get it too hot or it will bubble, once it starts, keep the heating even and bend it till you get 90 degrees. Let it cool and pull it out of the vise. After it cooled down I measured from my bend reference line to another line running parallel. I knew what the distance was before I bent it, now I know what it is after, so I knew how much to compensate for on the other bend. After the other bend, I checked it to make sure it would fit side to side, I spaced it off the console with rubber washer made from cutting thin slices of marine A1 fuel line. After I determined it fit side to side, I drew out the side panels to be cut back, I used my Bosch jig saw with a fine blade and it worked perfect. After it was all done, I peeled teh paper backing off and cleaned it up with alchohol

If you need one made, get me the dimensions and I'll ask the guy how much Sean. Mine was a bit more because of the venturi on top. If it is just straight like spares, I think they're a bit cheaper.

spareparts
03-26-2008, 06:44 PM
yeah the ventura at the top can be a little tricky. Before I started with a good piece, I went and got some scraps from the plexi store and played with the heat gun to see how they would bend. wonder if you could use a piece of tubing to bend the ventura

Sean

Nice Spare, but I have a feeling if I tried it it would not work

CB, my console is 27 inches across, and I would want it about 24 inches high. Thanks!!
