View Full Version : I/Os VS OutBoards
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 03:26 AM
lets start with the good things about i/os
i/os get good gas milage, their easier to repair, they can be made very large, you can have more power in a v-20 if you have an i/o, easier to repair because you can use auto parts, dont need to flush them when your don runnin them, they dont stress your transom to hang them you dont need an expensive braket to hang them, and they draw less water than the outboards. But take up deck space and if you have a fire theres a fire on the boat you have to check and change oil. they are much heavier than an outboard.
now outboards
they have better tork than an i/o, if you have a fire they are not toatily on the boat, can be toatily raised out of the water, dont take up space on the boat, are lighter than an i/o, and they are eaiser to replace than an i/o. But they are horrable gas hogs even for strokes they are louder they pollute the earth more thatn i/os and there exposed to everything you can bang them on docks and hurt them.

only thing that scares me about them is that seal that sometimes fails and lets water in lol...of course my overweight OB that sinks my scuppers aint no safer lol
charlie_the_tuna
11-22-2006, 03:32 AM
o/b's are also more expensive to replace.

Auto parts are different from marine engine parts. Take for example the carb. Auto carbs when the float sticks and lets the fuel keep coming, dump the extra gas out side the carb while marine carbs dump it into the carb to flood out the engine and preventing a fire.
I was told this by a friend who paid TWICE as much to get the marine carb instead of an auto carb for his boat.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 03:34 AM
i used to have an old 350 from a suburban in my v-20 an auto engine so i could use auto engine parts.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 03:35 AM
According to SEA WORTHY magizine, I/Os are more likely to sink than O/Bs due to the boots that leak.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 03:37 AM
Marine engines are built to run at higher RPMs since they don't have transmissions.
charlie_the_tuna
11-22-2006, 03:37 AM
hey fishbone, if you use an auto cam in your marine engine, the exhaust will suck water back in to the motor.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 03:41 AM
There is another prime example of the many differences between marine and auto engines.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 03:59 AM
she sure was fast though i could pass anything on the water. and my exaust was mouned on the transom above the water so she sounded like a muscle boat so i didnt need to worry about that.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 04:09 AM
but i do admit it was a huge gas hog and i put the 470 in it and that through a rod and now i got this dinkey little 4 banger. :'( but next season when i buy a merc 350 with 280 hp WHOA look out fishbonejr on top agian with the fastest v20 on this site,
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 04:27 AM
My 90 O/B will push mine at 23mph at 4800. Dont think I could handle WOT. ;D ;D
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 04:34 AM
when i drive a 06 corvette to work every day and have a twin 250 outobard boat that can go 60 mph on the water according to gps you think i cant handle a wussy little 23 mph ;D ;D ;D ::) :P :P
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 04:37 AM
I dont drive a Vega like you so I will settle for a truck and 23.
Will get a larger motor when this one dies but hope not to soon.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 04:38 AM
i would just have the vette but i need the truck for towin fishbonejr to and from the water.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 04:39 AM
how long does it take you to get on plane with that little of outboard.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 04:41 AM
depends on how hard I push it. Normally I'm not in any hurry so I ease it up. But when needed I can plane in about 10 to 20 seconds. Never timed it. Maybe next time out.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 04:47 AM
ok i always run hard because thats how i drive. that must be why i go through so many engines in three years. in boats and cars.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 04:50 AM
I cant afford engines nso I have to take care of what I got.
Just started eating a midnight snack. Please forgive the greasey fingers. ;D
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 04:52 AM
i cant eather but i do i just had to put a new engine in my mercedes benz that through a rod 3 days after the boat did so i am preety tight now becuase mb parts are like 4 time as expensive as american its an 1984 380sl so there ovesoly no warenty.

Bendz look nice but never wanted one. They are German Arent they.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 04:56 AM
yeah they are german. it was my first car and im very sentimental about my firsts so i have never sold it and never will just like my v-20 my first boat and as long as i am healty wealthy and wise they will always have my name on my title and sit in my driveway.
only car i have that is not from america.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 04:59 AM
Germans make good cars.
I'm like you, This is my first boat and its a V20. Plan on keeping it for a while

Turbinedoctor, except for the head gasket and freeze plugs, there are no differences between an automotive 350 Chevy and a marine 350. The newest of the new marine motors from GM have hardened exhaust valve seat inserts but are otherwise identical to their automotive crate motor equivalents. Most automotive motors come with brass freeze plugs, anyways.
The accessories are what make the difference. Marine carburetors have bent float bowl vents that dump the gas inside of the carb as stated earlier. All marine electronics are ignition protected. Marine distributors do not have vacuum advance. Marine ciruclating water pumps have stainless steel impellers and shafts. Marine fuel hose has a low permeability to fuel vapors.
Everything else is interchangeable between automotive and marine.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 05:08 AM
I stand corrected on all except the carbs which was my first reply. Guess I should have stopped there.
Thanks.

just saw pictures of your boat and have one opinion and one question
my opinion is your throttle is backwards and my question is how hard was it to put that step ladder on the bow i need that for when i beach my boat.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 05:24 AM
I wont hold that againist you.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 05:28 AM
Throttle Backwards???? tell me more. It was like that when I got it.
The Bow ladder was easy. A couple of pieces of marine grade oak, recess the back so the plate will fit and the bolt through the deck with plates under neithe.
The ladder is bolted through the oak into a plate to spread the load. The plates under the deck spread the load down there.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 05:34 AM
your binacle it is suposed to have the long part facinv ethe starboard side not the port side. did you buy the boat new?? or used.
thanks for theinfo on the ladder i am in the process of a semi over hall on the deck and dash so what 200 dollars more.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 05:36 AM
Bought it used. Does it matter which way it faces since it works fine like it is.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 05:36 AM
Could draw up a sketch of the mounting bracket for the ladder if you like.

That the Aqua you talked about.
Wellcraft will have to loose the bow rail for the ladder to work.
Got to go and check the Nitrogen bottle. Be back in 10 to 15 mins.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 05:52 AM
yeah on the left is the aqua Fishbonesr and my v-20 fishbonejr on the right.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 05:55 AM
my power went out for 2 seconds and shut down my computer darn wind
what nitrogen bottle are you a scientist i want a nitrus oxiede bottle on the v to see if i could turbo boost the power.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 06:02 AM
We put nitrogen into our chilled water loop when we drain it to keep the moisture out.
Can't help with the oxide.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 06:02 AM
From you talking I was expecting to see a smaller boat than that.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 06:04 AM
which one the aqua sport is about 29 feet and has a 9'8" beam the v-20 is 20'6" and an 8' beam do their both sea worhty.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 06:06 AM
The v looks small when put beside something like that.
Which do you like better.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 06:08 AM
yea its a fast boat for its size. i have to run it at full throttle for 10 minuets every time i take it out fishing becasue the carbon builds up on the cylinders and that is the only way to get it off or else i will be buyin two new out boards and right now if i had to do that i would sell the boat un powwerd. but when at full throttle everybodys eyes just pop out on other boats when i pass them its kinda funny.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 06:08 AM
the v because it is actuly a smother ride than the aqua and its a cruser not a fisher so its relaxin to take it out.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 06:10 AM
That big boat at 50mph, no wander there eyes pop out.
Have you tried that carbon remover that you add to the gas.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 06:12 AM
yea but i stopped after it made them run at a lower rpm than reccommended and even though their under warrenty if they blow for carbon build up yamaha will not pay for it so i need to do everything by the book.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 06:13 AM
The book says to run WOT once every trip?
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 06:14 AM
yup so thats what i do. and i burn 55 gallons an hour while doin it to.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 06:17 AM
55 GPH :o
I would keep it to a bare minimum per the book at that rate.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 06:19 AM
yea but with 300 gallon tanks for only 10 minuets every time i take it out its not that bad thats why i have the little one. i filled the v-20 last month with forty gallons and have only butned 15 since and have taken it out 5 times for 3 hours since.
turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 06:23 AM
Big boats are nice but they come with big price tags and fuel bills.
fishbonejr
11-22-2006, 06:25 AM

turbinedoctor
11-22-2006, 06:55 AM
