View Full Version : The Final Chapter!!

Well CB showed up today at 8:30 am!!

I got the new fittings it needed and we installed all. There were lots of missing little things??

We worked on all the problem spots, and got it so that we could take it to the water.

Well after the first trip to the water is was still in need of adjustments. Still Idled low and not getting full throttle? After a few minutes of running at 4000 RPM it would slow down and not go over 2500 rpms??

We brought it home change the plugs for the right plugs and gaped to right spec.
The plugs that were in it were the wrong ones and gaped at .025, when they call for .040!

Then it ran much better and we headed to the water, ran real well at first then the same thing happened, would lose rpm's and then it would race up all by it self??

Then the alarm went off and it was heating up and started shaking??

we shut it down let it cool and came back at 700 RPM's all the way.

Took to a Mechanic I know, and he told us he can't be sure but that he thought the motor has real issues internally!! And that in his opion its not worth fixing, cause it is going to need a total rebuild!!

I am all done.

Dang MJ, I don't think any of us know what to say. You got saltwater in your viens, you may be down, but your not out. If it don't kill ya it'll make ya stronger...

There is nothing to say, I can't afford to get it rebuilt and won't throw more money into a useless venture!

Between motor, shipping, Starter, the connetors, plugs, ect ect ... I have spent the $1700 from the sale of the old motor and the donations.

Not to mention all the agravation with the shipping, and the man hours that I and CB put in!!

I will have to see what I can get for the sale of the motor now?? I don't want to stiff anyone so I have to tell them whats up with it .

O well maybe next year :'(

Have you done a compression test? From what I can remember about your trials it may be a sensor acting up and kicking you into s.l.o.w. mode? How about running it with the cowl off so you can better see the throtle linkage and whats happenening with the buterflies. Just blowing out some ideas.

MJ, you sound as broke as I am. Keep the faith and hopefully its something minor and stupid. Let your buddy tinker with it and see what he finds out. You'll be splashing in again soon. Were all behind you ! ;) ;)

MJ hope it works out brother, maybe a little luck will blow your way on this.

MJ, that sucks man...I really hate it for you. I have too been upside down in a still "broken" outboard before so I know exactly how you feel man. :P

The way its sporadic and all i cant help but think its something simple like a sensor as well.

Maybe it will be a little comfort to you to know that as I type this I am naked. :D

chumbucket
08-04-2006, 12:59 AM
We already looked at all the "minor and stupid" things. Trust me. There is definately something wrong internally on that motor and at this stage of the game, we really hate to start tearing it down. MJ really cannot afford to start throwing money at hunches of what may be wrong. He cannot even have the mechanic start "tinkering" as the mechanic is too busy with other customers right now, plus his time will be worth money as well.
I felt really bad when I left MJ's house today because I fully expected to have everything pretty much ironed out. We fixed the oil injection linkage, choke, throttle linkage, put the StingRay fin on the broken cavitation plate (that helped a great deal). Tach was working, correct spark plugs, fixed the high idle issue within the control box.
Seems to run good for a very short time, then starts overheating. Plenty of water flow out the tell-tale, but the alarm will start sounding, the motor shakes violently and shuts down. The heads were extremely hot at that point. Let it cool and it will eventually start again, so we just idled back to port. BTW; this happened several times. Not just the one time.
I don't know. ???
On MJ's behalf, I would like to thank everyone for their efforts, but I fear he's all done for a while. He's pretty disillusioned right now.

get a compression test and let us know what you find

Skools Out
08-04-2006, 01:04 AM
take the t-stats out and try it with out them if the compression is good. I had a 140 did that and ran fine with no t-stats but wouldn't with them.

08-04-2006, 01:05 AM
Good Call Skools, *I had an Evinrude 120 Looper that did the same thing also. *After replacing the T-Stats all was well. *Apparently the motor would heat up and launch itself into S.A.F.E mode. *I understand there are a number of problems which can display the same symptoms. *Just hoping its something simple for MJ's sake he deserves it.

08-04-2006, 01:09 AM
hate to say it but Dirt dobbers are to blame for this issue usually. They get into the motor and fill them up with dirt and it just stays in bad locations till the motor burns up.

phester
08-04-2006, 01:17 AM
what is a dirt dobber?....never heard of it [or one]

Stinky_Hooker
08-04-2006, 01:33 AM
Its like a wasp, but they dont sting and they are usually solid colored. They build the little dirt "bungalow" looking things hanging in sheds and pump houses and such.

08-04-2006, 03:58 PM
Thanks all!! *It was a great try, but it has failed!

As CB said we have tryed all, and after the news from the marina I feel if I keep trying, I will be throwing away more money?
I might do more harm then good and have nothing to sell?

I will do a compression test and let you guys know, But what ever it is the motor is going to be sold for what ever I can get for it.

The motor has been mickey moused so much its hard to tell what is good and what is bad? I have no idea why so many things were missing from this motor?

This is like a old car you have and you no its junk but want it to go, but you know its always going to be junk and anything you do will just be a waste of time and money.

So Thanks all for the Donations and the encouragement!! I appreciate all the help and will never forget what you have all done!!

We will see Spring Brings??

Yea I understand the frustration, MJ do the compression, because if it is good all around it can be fixed for little exspense and I'm holding out hope that it checks out good for you. I've had those junk cars your talking about, they can nickle and dime you but if the motor is tight and the lower unit is good then the rest your capable of doing better than a lot of guys here. Give it a shot at this point you got no other alternative so make lemonade ;)

Don't throw in the towel just yet. Find out what is wrong. I have a feeling it's not as bad as you think.

chumbucket
08-04-2006, 10:03 PM
Well that may very well be true. But, the situation at hand is MJ used all of the fund raiser monies as well as some of his own up to this point and cannot afford to drop any more into it at this time. Granted it doesn't cost anything to tear things apart to investigate. He just cannot afford to fix whatever the problem may be. And the season is rushing by very quickly. At this point, if he decides to keep at it, he'll probably end up covering everything up until next year.
Trust me, when that motor started shutting down and overheating, it sounded really wrong.

I just emailed the whole saler that bought the 175.

I just don't have it in me to screw some one with not telling them the truth of all the issues.

They will give me crap if I tell them and if I don't some poor guy will think he is set and have to go into hock trying to fix it.

Waiting for the whole saler to email me if he wants it??

bigshrimpin
08-06-2006, 03:16 AM
MJ - that sux . . . before you sell the motor test the compression. It might be as simple as a fuel restriction (carbs) or a corroded t-stat. Hopefully the motor didn't have a piston melt party!!

chumbucket
08-06-2006, 04:45 AM
I don't believe it's fuel Tim. The heads were red hot. I was sitting out on the bracket making adjustments while we were running with the cover off. I touched the heads and burnt my hand. There was a good stream from the tell tale. I would think if there was a corroded t-stat, they wouldn't have opened to allow water through. We'll probably investigate a little further if MJ wants to. I think he's a bit reluctant right now.
The wholesaler will probably give him something in the neighborhood of $1000. Still a $200 loss from what he paid B_R, then some of his own out of pocket expenses. ???

reelapeelin
08-06-2006, 10:10 AM

MJ - You could always go back to the I/O . . . and get busted *** boat with a decent motor and outdrive for $1k. There are litterally hundreds of those deals out here. I can keep my eyes peeled for some bargains . . .

In the process of picking MJ's mechanics brain a bit more based on his initial evaluation of the motor, He believes that the wrong plugs and gap were in that motor for a reason. He thinks that the motor had an overheating problem unrelated to the t-stats and somewhere along the line, that was someones simple fix. Run a cooler plug with less gap to keep the combustion point to a minimum.

reelapeelin
08-07-2006, 09:36 AM
Heck guys...w/ the deals and financin' they're offerin' these days, MJ could find a ''hold-over'' from last year and hardly notice the payments, specially w/ what he'll get for the old motor as a down-payment...I'm not wild about payments either, but it sure put some relaibility into takin' the boat out...

macojoe

As CB said this motor has been joy riged for sometime, with wire inplace of C clips, oil injection linkage missing wrong plugs, gap on plugs not set right, over heating, ect ect ect...

Hoping to hear from the whole saler today??

But that may have to wait also as I had to take my wife to the Hosiptal yesterday afternoon and they had to do a Emergency Bi-Pass operation on her!

They say it went well she was on the table 6 hours, Doc called said all seemed well and she in ICU.

She will have to remain in the hos. 10 days or so? And then we start the process of trying to teach her to walk again :-/

It took a good 3 months the last time and 6 months for her to get ok at it, this time the leg was much much worse and may take longer??

Some were along the line I pissed some budy off?? Cause I have had ZERO luck and it gets nothing but worse every day!!

I don't know where to begin MJ. First, sorry to hear about the problems with your wife. I hope she gets better soon, but I also know that it will be a tough thing to go through for you and her and we'll be rootin for you.

The motor - F***!! I feel really bad about this man! I am soooo sorry!! I swear it never overheated on me - I guess maybe because the wrong plugs? I don't know. I have a good mind to call the guys that swapped the motors and complain about the missing parts on the motor - they had to have stolen them.

The t-stats were brand new, installed by the previous owner, so they should have been good - unless they were stolen too!

Again, I'm very, very sad and disappointed in reading all of this. My apologies to you MJ and I hope you don't hate me for all of this. :-[ I would have never tried to $hit anybody. If the shipper hadn't broken that lower unit, its worth a pretty penny. We certainly had all 100% bad luck on this deal.

MJ, sorry to hear about your wife...sounds like you guys are havin' a tough time of it lately...we'll be thinkin' about you and if there's anything we can do, just holler ...

MJ. Sorry to hear about your wife, been there myself three years ago.I was only 36 at the time. Was Diving on a wreck in 105 ft, came up with chest pains. Thought I got the bends. Made it to the E.R. before hitting the floor. Some people recover fast, I didnt. I had to learn to walk again myself, go to rehab. My wife, who was only my girlfriend at the time did alot for me, helped me in and out of bed, getting me in and of the tub. I was out of work for a year, almost lost everything and I thought everything in my first marriage. If your kids are still living at home, she will need at the help she can get until she rebounds. AND SHE WILL. Our thoughts and prayer are out there for ya both. DOnt give up on the V. That one listed for $1500.00 sounds good. Go for It !!

Racer, that's wonderful!!! I can't wait till my little one is able to pray.

MJ, I can't pretend to know what the Good Lord's purpose is in all of this. But one thing is for sure: your wife's situation is a reality check for all of us. Life and good health really are a gift and we should be thankful for each day we are given. Not only that, but we should redeem each day we are given.

I know we all love our boats, but there are certainly more important things in life and we do well to keep the important things high up on the priority list. Here's the preacher's priority list :) God, spouse, family, friends, hobbies. The nice thing about this V20 forum is that we can build up good relationships with our friends while at the same time enjoying our V20's. CB's a great example of this as are all of you who have encouraged MJ.

MJ, I'm also praying for you buddy. My prayer is that the Lord would shower you with His grace. That you would be given peace and comfort in the midst of these difficult times. And that the Lord would use all of us to help minister to your needs as we are able. If there's anything I can do to be a help, please let me know. I know a lot of guys have said that, and I think we all mean it. We're here for you.

Warm regards,

Steve

Amen to that Grace! MJ, There so many prayers going out for you right now. The good Lord will intervene just to shut us up! Try to stay strong in your faith and for your wife and family, they are what is most important!! The motor will take care of itself. You are having a bad run right now but I'm sure things will improve!! You know who you really need to talk to right now... he is there waiting...You also have a lot of people here pulling for you and here to help support you through this time. Heck, I'm sure that there are quite a few besides me that didn't get a chance to help with the last fund raiser that would like to help now. $1500 is nothing between one or two hundred people. You are being pushed down hard right now... We just need to push back HARDER! God Bless you MJ! I'll stop blabbering now.

I've been thinking really hard about it. The only thing I could come up with was this:

1st Annual Wellcraft V20 Fishing Tournament

Make this first one a "half and half" with the half of the cash raised going to MJ and the other half the winner of the tournament.

A couple of ground rules - pictures of the fish on a scale and beside a tape.

I was thinking around $15 or $20 entry fee would be cool. Problems I see with this whole thing is:

1) What fish to target?
2) Do we have at least 20 people fishing on this board? If so, they don't seem to be talking about it much.
3) Dishonest participants, possibly newbies come in and fake us out with old pictures. Hey, we could also require that a "Wellcraft V20 Tourny 2006" sign be shown in the pic to make it a little harder to fake it.

We could let this run until after labor day and have our "weigh in" in the fishing section. The only problem I see with it is if we make the target fish fluke, Capt. Bent is a sure winner - the man is on fire right now!

All this would be contingent on Bigshrimpin's approval, which I have yet to discuss with him.

What do ya'll think?

reelapeelin
08-09-2006, 02:25 PM
BR, a tournament is a great idea!!...we don't HAVE to get together...and we don't HAVE to determine what fish... ;)...

How's this: everybody who wants to participate enters and fishes their own territory, their own target species, we have a start/ stop date after all entries are in...following the stop date we give POINTS for total pounds of fish AND POINTS for total numbers of fish...the idea is that those who catch bigger fish make less points on quantity and more points on poundage; conversely smaller fish accumulate points for quantity and less points on poundage...

Does that make any sense??

100 1lb bream get same points as 1 100lb tuna...
50 2lb specs get same points as 2 50lb macs...

Will that work??...

Honor System: only way to go here...everybody's gotta be honest about what and when they catch...pictures can be faked and if somebodys gonna tell the truth or not, they will or they won't...but here's what I think...I think we got a group of honest guys here who wanna help out...so I say we're OK to take everybody's word for what they've caught (maybe we better keep a little closer eye on Willy...looks a little ''shifty'' in some of his Gallery pics ;D :-* :-* )

Whadda ya'll think? ??? ;D

I'm in! Point system sounds fine. Also ,if we wanted to do largest fish, might be determined by percentage of record size for any given species caught.

Maybe even just flat out just heaviest fish? *I'd say everyone should have access to some type of big fish no matter were they are, whether it be striper, catfish, carp, cod, tuna, sailfish, reds, black drum, sheepshead, bonito/albacore, king macks, sharks, bluefish, cobia etc. etc. *What else?

If we go for heaviest fish . . . . I'll win this one for sure!!

BR - This site is as much yours as it is mine . . . I just fork over the whopping $6.95/month to keep it online.

Hey BS, thats funny as heck, I was just getting ready to PM you about this - honestly!

So, now that we've got your royal blessing I would like to start a post to #1 see if there is enough interest and #2 bang around some ideas about how to do it. I will be glad to run the thing, but we need a good game plan. You are saying you will win heaviest fish for sure - so maybe that's not the best way to do it. I want to try to keep it as simple as possible. Some people have already suggested formulas for making this open to all species which I think is a great idea, but how do we do it? Would you have to take pics of 100 individual bream or the whole lot on a scale or what?

I can make this harder to cheat at by making a 1 page color flyer that has your entry # on it (along with some wellcraftv20 fishing tourny propaganda). I'll mail it out to each person when they pay and they will have to include it next to the fish in the picture. I know you fish hungry bastads are gonna be fishing over labor day ;D

BS, what's your opinion on it? Any ideas on how to do it - biggest fish, most fish, formula per species, only 1 species such as fluke (that cuts alotta people out).

???

i think it would have to be a slot tourney. a lot easier to catch 1 hundred pound tuna than it is to catch 50 two pound trout. bag limits could also be a prob. when you enter tell us what species ur gonna target. i say two species limit.we post the slot limit for each species. for example, redfish slot could be 16-28 inches. dont worry bout wieght. not fair unless all fish wieghed on same scale. trout slot could be 14- 21 inches. closest to max inches wins. a 20 inch trout would beat a 25 inch red cause it is closer to max size. all slots would be agreed on before start of tourney. in the event of a tie, most fish caught (within species class) wins. or closest to bag limit in ur state. throw down a newspaper with fish so we can verify date. also, we gotta figure on weather. if its beautifull in NC and storming in AL, not fair. this is where regional groups can come in to play. i dunno, just an idea.

Racer, great ideas. About bad weather, I think it would be cool to make the tourney last a couple or 3 weeks...maybe a month! Not everybody will be able to fish on the same day or even weekend. That should accomodate the weather thing too. Heck, I mean if it rains for 4 weeks where you live (not you racer) you might ought to move anyway ;)

I like that idea. I'm going to start a tourney post, but haven't decided whether to post in fishing section or general. I think it will get max exposure as a sticky under general section (I know RAP, we just got rid of the stickys there! ::)).

id say schedule it for one weekend. if weather an issue, have a regional do over. you give me a month, or a week for that matter, i gonna max out every species in the water!

Dayum Racer, you been holding out on us? Where's the pix bro? Is there something you haven't been telling us about your fishin abilities?

We got BS on one hand saying he can take biggest fish and now Racer claims if we give him more than one day he gonna get citations for multiple species!

Two things - can you guys take me fishing with you? And next question, when? ;D ;D 8)

I was thinking September 1st - October 1st with the quote unquote wiegh-in on October 1st. Gives us 3 weeks to make up rules and get entry fees in. I'm with the majority here though, I'm not gonna call all the shots. Just wouldn't be democratic ;)

Wow you guys are to much!! I can't believe you want to do this again!!

I don't know what to say!! But I am beginning to feel like the site Charity case!! :'(

I feel like I am taking advantage of the site!! And I don't want to do that!!

But I like the idea of a V20 Tourney!! That will be great every year!!

To help BS with the site, or some other member besides someone with the Maco name!!

But I have to ask?? Can I get 1/2 Charity and of coarse I will win the tourney!! So Can I take the whole pile?? ;) :D ;D

You guys are awsome!! Thanks everyone!! I will have to call my wife and tell her what you guys are doing, and all the great prays all of you have sent her way!!

OK update on the wife:

She is out of ICU and in a single room.

What they had to do is cut her from the groin to the ankle and put in new vain on the right leg. This is on the inside of the leg.

Then the doc said that there was a problem with the leg swelling when all the new blood goes in (we knew this from the last time) and that she was swelling much worse!! And was afraid that the swelling was going to cut off the new blood supply.

So what they had to do is go on the out side of the same leg and cut a long line in the caf and the thigh. This will allow for the leg to swell with out cutting the blood supply.

When the swelling starts to go back down they will be able to close the open cuts that they made for expansion.

Now she has also had some problems with the Left leg for a while and they did a bi pass on that one last year as well.

But she has had some pain and they now think she has a infection in the bone of that leg?? They did xrays today and will be letting us know tomorrow what they have found?

Other then not wanting to eat, she is doing pretty good, but I bet I be fine if I had a little button hanging on my jonny that if I felt some pain I just push and get a rush of Morphine!!

Ok Guys Thanks for all the prays, good words and everything else!!

MJ WE LOVE YOU MAN! :-* :-* Special prayers are being sent to the man upstairs right now! Wishing you and the wife the best on those test results.

On the tourney, I just want to know, who is taking you fishing? Is it CB - are ya'll gonna pile into the tin boat or what? We gotta have action shots! ;D

Thanks for the update. You shouldn't feel bad about taking advantage of the site at all. I don't know a soul that has had worse luck than you (I think I might be tied though ::)) and that's what the brotherhood is all about - helping each other from day one. Whether it be information, humor, cat calls, thongs, did I just say that?

Ok, Blue stepping down now :-[

Now, what are we gonna do for CB - he's worked his tail off too! Well, I think MJ worked part of it off butt....anywho...that's another intimate story...

I also want to say I'm sorry to CB about how the motor worked out. I know you've put in alot of time and God know's none of us have alot of spare time in this day and age. So thank you for what you did for MJ. 8)

You are a good man. Hopefully one day all of us can get together and swill a cold one together - we'll give MJ a root beer. ;)

No worries B_R. No need to appologize to me. We'll get things worked out one way or another. MJ has become a good friend, so I don't mind helping when I can.
Whatever you guys work out for a Tourney, I'll be in. 8)

slow down there MJ. you aint got her won yet! never count out team no bucks! and yeah blue, i do have a special ability. for some reason, ever since i was young i have been able to catch more fish in a month than i could in a weekend. i'm just blessed. i would post the picks but, they went to the dump along with everything else i owned when katrina rolled thrue. i'm with you bud, i'm down with the majority. i just worried if we do do a slot tourney for a month we will have a 25 way tie. plus i think a weekender will pull more peeps. but hey, i'm ez. i gonna win it no matter what, lol. gotta pay for a new vhf somehow.

You guys should see MJ Fluking when he gets in the groove. The guy is like a machine. It's a continuous motion. Once they're on the surface, the net goes under them but only in case they drop. He unhooks and slides them right in the well without missing a beat, then the jig is back in the water before you can say "nice tassles MJ". 8)

BIG FISH should be a ''Tournament-in-a-Tournament" w/ an additional fee to be in it...I'm wonderin' about weight, though, BR...the guys w/ access to salty-water have QUITE an advantage...it ain't just real difficult to boat a 200lb shark...betcha Frank or Hi-Diver know where to do that easy...but Mac Attack gonna have a tough time commin' up w/ an "Eye" to compete w/ that...Hi-Diver's idea on % of species record sounds more way to go, but I'll go along w/ the crowd on it...I'm easy as a hooker on a battleship... 8)...

Another idea to get past the weather thingy: Within the tournament period (1,2,3, or 4 weeks...whatever it turns out to be), your tournament entry would be from ONE (or two) days of fishin'...this would get around the weather issue AND even things up for the guys who don't get to fish as often as others...

whadda ya'll thank??
