Here's the deal. We don't even know if we can do this but I had an idea to start a fishing tournament on this site, with blessing from BigShrimpin.

This first year I would like to do a 50/50 with half the entry fee earnings going to MJ who is down on his luck big time, and the other half going to the winner of the tourney. BS and I won't make anything of course (unless we win, and he has already said he was - we will see ::)).

So my plan for this post is two fold: 1 - who would actually enter? We need 20 good men, minimum, anything else is icing. Entry fee as of right now would be 15 or 20 bucks. Up for debate. 2 - what species and how to judge the winner? Great ideas have been posted under the "The Final Chapter" post already.

I think we should make a list of 20 target species to include in the tournament and stick to only the 20. I can make a spreadsheet with formulas to calculate the % in length of where the fish falls in relation to min and max lengths per species, which is TBD. Racerx mentioned that length would be better than weight due to variation in scale calibration, and I tend to agree.

I could print out official entry fee paperwork and mail or email to participants upon payment. Pictures of fish caught would need to be displayed beside a tape measure and perhaps the entry form copy or maybe just the entry form number to make it official and prevent as much cheating as possible.

Up for debate, among other things - how long to run the tourney? One weekend? One week? One month? etc. I'm afraid if we make it for just one weekend, participation will be limited, whereas if we make it from Sept.1 through October 1st, we get much more participation. BUT, Racerx has vowed he will woup all ya'll if he's given a full month - sounds like the trash talkin has already started to me 8)

Entry fee? How much? Main thing is how many people can commit?

Also, you could even do a point system and also factor in amount of fish caught? But I'm afraid to make this too complicated.

Your suggestions are welcome now. Once we see that we can get 20 and the details hammered out I can start an Official Tournament Entry post on the Fishing section.

Are you in? You have a say in whether your favorite species will be included, so speak up!!

20 people X 20 bucks = 400 bones with the winner and MJ each getting 200 bones! Turn 20 into 200! This is a 20/200 tournament!! Here is your chance to #1 let us know if you will commit and also have a say in the rules and #2 the whole shootin match is up for debate, so share your thoughts now because I want to iron it out very soon! Time is of the essence!

HAS ANYONE THOUGHT ABOUT WAITING TILL FALL AND MAKING IT A

STRIPED BASS TOURNEY ???

I thought I was in, and I still will be if I can paint stripes on a Walleye. *So that no one is left out that wants to enter why not alllow all species and compare your catch to the state record for that type of fish. *The state would be the state or province in which you are fishing. *We would be comparing percentage weight, all species would be compared against each other.

http://www.statefishingrecords.com/

I would also think that as the entry fee goes up the number of entries will go down.

Example: *Mac Attack catches a 4.75lb walleye *His fish would be compared against the Ontario record walleye 22.25 lb * * *4.75/22.25=21.34%

Rap catches a 12.25lb striped bass *NC record striped bass *54.125lb * * * * * * *12.25/54.125=22.6%

Rap would win.

I suggest using state records because growth rates are different for all states

I'm in . Think about the seasonality of the specis? Best fishing for stipers down here is late Oct to Jan 1. I'm in no matter what the out come of rules. Higher numbers of entries is for a better pot vs higher entry fee. Whet ever happened to the regional V-20 tournys?

Got to prove the weight. Will everybody be able to snap a pic on a scale? Probably not as easy on a released fish?

I think weight is the best way to go too though. Good call fellas. By gosh if I catch a 29" fluke that weighs 15 lbs and someone beats me with a 29.5" 12 lber I'll be ticked!

I'm with the % of state record thing. That makes it nice and clean and a pretty simple calculation. What about limiting the species? Should we limit to say around 20? Or leave this wide open?

I think I've seen around 10 commitments so far. Capt. Bent must be out fishing.

I'm in for whatever. I like an entry of $20 for several reasons. I think length would be better than weight. Everybody has an accurate ruler. Heck, it is for fun, right? I pledge that all my winnings are going to MJ anyways. :)

Mac_Attack
08-10-2006, 12:29 PM
I'd leave the species open. *Let's say in Sept the walleyes are on vacation but the jumbo perch show up I would switch over to perch. *Why couldn't you post for two or three species its the greatest % that's going to take the money. *Another idea is to allow mulligans like in golf. *On in entry form an angler would state his #1 species but he could buy a mulligan for 5 or 10 bucks. *This way say I was going after walleyes but I hook into a giant catfish I could enter the caught cat also. *This would raise more money but also increases the work involved. *Billy Mac *;D

I just read Airslot post. *Length would be a good measure and easy to spot in a photo.

ANOTHER THING BR, IF WE CATCH ONE THE FIRST DAY OF A MONTH LONG TOURNEY, CAN WE UPDATE WITH A LARGER FISH CAUGHT 20 DAYS LATER ???

Blue_Runner
08-10-2006, 01:28 PM
Well, Cy what about if we make the tourney run for x number of days but you only can sign up to tourney fish for 2 days? BEFORE you fish you would have to let me know your 2 dates, which I would record and email or fax or snail mail your proof of purchase with those dates printed on it. Just kinda spinnin off of one of RAP's ideas.

C YENSEN
08-10-2006, 02:29 PM

reelapeelin
08-10-2006, 04:03 PM
Pre-pickin' DTF (Day To Fish) during the TP (Tournament Period) would be just like signin' up for a ''regular'' tournament that has a pre-determined date...plus you could pre-fish prior to even selecting your DTF...find that Honey-Hole, register your DTF w/ BR and go clean house!! ;)

Since the board is recorded, why not just have each entrant PM BR w/ his intended DTF and include all pertinant info at that time...save a tree...

Do we REALLY have to prove our catch (weight, length, quantity)?...it's gonna be hard to verify no matter how ya do it and if a LIAR enters he can always manipulate photos if he wants to...

If somebody CHEATS on this and he's dicovered, my vote would be to expose him and ban him from the board...and then lop off his Nortons :o ... ::)

TOURNAMENT RULES...I've been readin' some great ideas bein' kicked around on this board as to how we do this...

BR, suggestion...why doncha take those ideas an "draught" a 1st copy of what the Rules and Proceedures are gonna be...post it on the board, then everybody can put in their ideas...but we gotta start w/ somethin'...if I can help, holler ;) ;D RAP

Blue_Runner
08-10-2006, 04:30 PM
Matter of fact that's what I was planning on doing RAP. Just wanted to get some ideas FIRST so that first draft won't be too far off base.

But I'm with you, we gotta get something down on paper and tweak from there or it'll be a never ending circle of "what about this" and "I'd rather do it this way" with the end result of us gettin nowhere with this tourney.

Also, I sure would like to see a few more snaggers say they will commit.

Mac_Attack
08-10-2006, 04:44 PM
He!! let's do it even if we only get 10 or 12 entries. *See how it runs tweak the next one, if it needs tweaking. *Could turn into something worth while. *Billy Mac *;D

i think a draft is a great idea. you might wanna look at some other tourney rules first. i wanna reinirate, a month long tourney wont be fair to all, and wont draw as many entries, and subsequintly, less funds for MJ. i also think wieghing the fish wont be fair. if its a close finish on two different scales someones gonna feel cheated. some peeps dont have a scale, myself included. i think a good one goes for around 50 bucks. i can get one of those spring one cheap. but they not exactly tourney quality.
one more thing, this is to raise money for mj, we sure we wanna make him wait till fall?

ebol5
08-10-2006, 05:25 PM
I am in no matter what the rules, This is more about overcoming MJ's run of bad luck. A touney is a great way to add some fun and (friendly) competition. There are a lot of ways to go, I sort of like the idea of maybe a given length of time (2 to 4 weeks) but limit the number of days catches you can use (maybe 2 days). This will allow folks to get around any weather problems. For the northern guys (certain species) there could be a total weight catagory and for us salty dogs a largest fish (%wise) catagory. This might help make up for local species availability.. just a thought. Photos should be included (measuring tape included ) if only for reference and because WE LIKE PICTURES! However, in the end it will be about the honor system and I think that will be sufficient for this bunch of whack jobs on this board. Of course I say that with the utmost affection. :-*

Alright boys, lets make this simple as possible.

1. $20 entry fee.
2. The prize is a very nice wall plaque engraved adorned w/ V-20 artwork.
3. Tournament period will run for will run Sept 1-30, or Sept1 through Oct 30.
4. The winner is the most notable catch as judged by the board itself. You know, an 8lb walleye is a heck of a catch compared to a 3lb speck. We'll judge the most notable catch.
5. Tourney proceeds (minus expenses) go to help a board member down on his luck.
6. This is the first annual,,,,get it!

Ok, the entry fee is $20 dollars minimum, any (best) two days of fishing during the month can count?? (every body is in suspence as the results are fluid, a little more difficult to track..) and really, in the spirit of the thing, does it matter who catches the fish as long as it is caught on our board registered boat..? just some more thoughts, but I go with the consensus..

Snaggers, I'm really, really close on this rough draft. But I'm having a hard time about whether to make this length or weight. Some have expressed concern about not owning a scale.

The problem with using length is that the state record for your state might not include the length - therefore we wouldn't have a benchmark for % comparison, whereas all state records mention weight.

The more I look at this I'm thinking we'll have to go with weight. Anyone without a scale will need to either have to buy/borrow one or keep the fish and take it somewhere to be weighed. Draft to follow shortly.

Also, I'm going out of town until Sunday so give all of your opinions on my draft between now and then and I'll sort through things when I get back.

Thanks guys for you interest!
