MJ called me this afternoon. Seems he got hit by a rogue 10' wave and almost went down. He was out fishing with his bud Kenny when the wave hit. The boat rolled, windsheild blew out, electronics blew off. His face got cut up pretty good from the glass. Sounds like they barely made it back to port.
I'm sure MJ will post on this later when he gets a chance. I'm just glad that he and Kenny are okay. The boat can be fixed.

Glad to here everyone is ok and safe. Screw the damage to the V.
We all have enogh spare parts floating around to getter running again.
Lefty and I were just outside of the inlet last season and we were getting nailed from all side's. a little pale in the face, but back in one piece.

I posted in another post a guy giving away a V. It slid or fell off a trailer. he offered it for free to a friend of mine. Not sure if he will do the same for me though, but I'll check. It's a Sport V-20...or a V20 Sport. Windshield might work on M.J.'s boat.

I have a extra boat with a good windshield it is a 74 V20 but it is in Texas. We could all pitch in for shipping and I will donate it for free. I have some pictures that MJ posted for me in the General section.

If your gonna take a big ole rogue wave and you have to be in a 20' boat, I think I want to be in a V-20 cuddy. Now, I'm gonna have another talk with Jack to calm our nerves ::)

Thanks everyone!! We are fine thats the first thing!!

Today was one hell of a birthday for me!!

We went out of Falmouth to Vinyard sound, got to the fishing grounds, fishing was real slow!!

The weather man said the the wind would be out of the East all day with seas 2 feet. Well they lied!!!

Is was west most of the day and that was fine in the morning when it was light, But by 9 am we were surounded by white water every were and said lets get out of here while the tide was slack!

Well this area has a area that gets real bad as the water has three different in lets, it can get nasty!!

I was doing 15 knots in 2 to 4 footers, slow and steady. Got hit by one wave and the water came over the bow and over the windshield and just gave us a good soaking.

We were at a area none as Middle Ground about 5 miles from thew harbore when the waves started to get nasty, But mangeable, all of the sudden we came over a 3 foot wave and it was like we droped into a hole a mile deep!! I looked up and all there was, was a wall of water all of 10 feet!! I yelled Kenny, I ducked behid the windshield and BAM, the windsahield exploded and the lights went out for a couple of seconds, when the cme back on the windshield was blown out the GPS & Fish Finder was hanging from there wires, I looked and Kenny was fliped over the seat to the floor and the boat was full I mean full of water, Kenyy are you alright? He was fine with a cut on his knee and hand.

Boat was listing heavy on Keny side and still rolling, I tryed to turn to the roll to equalize the water, but she was not comming around and kenny yelled the motor was under water, I turned and looked and saw just the top of the engin cover and heard no motor!

I said Kenny we are going in! He was out of his boots and rain pants in 3 seconds, I got the boots off, and tryed to turn the wheel again and the engin was still running! I gave it all she had and she turned and the water leveled out and we were up right again!

Kenny took the bucket removed the fish box cover and started to bail as I headed for woods hole as it was 3 miles closer then Falmouth.

Kenny was getting tired and I said come here, said you see that water tower, he said yes, I said steer right for it!!
I took ken nys place bailing, when I got the box empty I started to pump out the bildge with the manual pump. Just as we were getting near woods hole the motor was running well and the water was just in the bildge but to the top.

I now switched places with Kenny and said we can make it to Falmouth, he said you sure I said yes! I picked up the GPS and it was still on and tracking Famouth, went real slow and made it in, when I got in Kenny said your a F___ Mess, seems like I got cut up pretty good, I have small cuts all over my face and right between the eyes I have 3 good cuts, Blood every were, There is blood all over were Kenny was holding on , on the dash and floor were I was dripping all over.

Took some cell pic's and will post this week end when I get home since I am down at the camp site.

All Damage is p;retty confinded to the windshield, both sides were blown out, supports snaped right off, But the center glass still in one piece??

I have all the frame but screws were pulled out and not sure if it can be repaired or not?? I will know more when I get her home and start to fix it up. But I am sure I am going to need a new windshield!!

Axe I would reall apreciate that windshield!! If you can find out the shipping I would be more thewn greatful!!!!

Ok guys thats it for now, I have one heck of a headache and need some sleep, But not before I thank the guy above and kiss the ground again!!

But windshield or not, Kenny and I arfe takiong mthe V out again next Tue!!

Thanks again all!!

I've put my V into some pretty nasty rips on the Race at full mon tides where waves come every second from various directions, but I hope I never see a tall and sharp 10 footer in front of my V :o
That sounds frigging scary, after all our boats are only 20 feet long. :o

MJ, I hope you and Kenny shake all that bad sh*** out of the way and continue to report fun and good catches.

A lesser boat and/or a lesser engine you would not be talking to us now, plus a helping hand from above for sure because engines generally do not run under water.
I am glad you and Kenny made it to port safe, hope all will be ok for your V also. Let me know if I can be of some help.

Thanks everyone!!!

Axe the zip is 02673, Thanks again!!!!!!!!!

No drinks CB just tired as all hell!

Yes the V is one tuff boat!! and all you guys asking for capacity plates, Forget it!! I had more water in there yesterday then you can have without being on the bottom of the ocean, and she stayed floating the whole time!!

As for my $700 motor goes, It has been the best $700 I have ever spent!! and as Willy said if I had a lesser motor, this one a HP, it would not have been strong enough to push all that weight to get the boat level again!

Called Kenny this morning and we are both ok, some cuts and bumps, and we are both soar this morning but doing just fine!!

I have to work Fri & Sat, going to pull the windshield now that I know I have a new one coming, Kenny and I will be fishing the V on Tue with out a windshield till it gets here and I have time to put it on.

CB you still going out with me next week?? :o

Thanks again guys!!

07-25-2007, 11:28 AM
OMG! That IS one great motor! A serious close call no doubt! Were there any other boats around? What was the water temp?

Sounds like you did everything right. When the wave period gets tight and some big rollers come in the nose of the V will go in and its sounds like you stuffed her pretty good to shatter the whole windshield!

Thank the Lord ya'll made it back And what a bonus to bring the boat back too! Motor still running like new! WOW! :o 8)

Hey MJ sorry for the 20 questions but did any of your gear float out of the boat? Not that the gear was important considering your lives were in imminent danger.

macojoe
07-25-2007, 11:39 AM
There were lots of boats around but no one even saw us, they were a little far away.
Water 65*

Another boat came in just as we did and asked what happened as I was covered in blood, I told him and they got scared themselfs and thats why they were back in already they had a 20' CC

It was getting tuff out there!

Ha Ha great minds think a like CTT!!

But the thing here is that it would not have helped this time!!
With all the water it could not have pumped fast enouigh to save bthe day, it would have helped when I got her up right.

Wow MJ! Just read it. Glad you are both OK. I would not be surprised if the bracket displacement helped you in that terrible situation. It certainly helped having a full transom. Mine would have been under (again). Let me know if you need any help. I may have a spare Rule 1500GPH. I'll let you know.

The least the coast guard can do is mark the spot with a buoy till they have time to fix that hole in the water. ;D ;D

Man, sorry ta hear about your accident. Im glad you all will be ok. I know youll have that ole V back right in no time. I had a close call 6 years ago. A wave hit me in the side, almost threw me over the side of my 16 ft. Carolina (plywood) boat in the mouth of the Albemarle sound. I was by myself, scared the $hit out of me. Since then Ive learned ta have a great deal of respect for the water, even small bodies of water.Be careful but get back on that horse and go.

Thanks again everyone!!

Thanks for all the offers to help with parts and stuff!!

I have the boat at home and I am at the camp grounds, I will be going home tomorrow and will be able to ck everything out well.

I belive all damage is just going to be the windshied and supports. Everything else did very well!

Hamerhead you can suport the windshield all you want, if you hit a wave like I did it is still going to be gone!

I think I am going to get the windshield fixed up and clean the boat up.

Then she is going up for sale, It has been a good boat for 9 years and has seen its share of big water!!
I have been thinking this for a long time now, and for the places I fish I have een luckky all these years!

we will see?

So far Axe has a windshield for me and I have to wait for the shipiing charges? I am going to be fishing with out a windshield starting next week till I get his.

Thanks all!!

Say it ain't so. Rather than sell, we should start a V20 museum and induct it as the first.

As for parts, I'll trade you a pump for the center glass of your windshield.

As for the sale, its something I have been thinking about, will it happen?? I have a lot of time in this boat and like it. It will have to be a great deal to makwe me sell!!

As soon as I know I have a new windshield cominmg Boat I will make that trade with you!!

I don't want to say yes and then not get one. Cause when all else fails I might be able to get plex glass and some how piece the frame back toghter??

But I am sure Axe will come thur soon!!

OK MJ, let me know. But do not despair. Mine sank and I still own it. It took a lot of work to get it back together. I do not think I mentioned that the new 2004 Ficht blew a powerhead 20 minutes after first launch. Water in the fuel??? It's been at Millway Marina for 3 weeks now but the new powerhead is installed and should be ready for this weekend. Thank goodness for the 7 year non-declining warranty. The motor was used (demo motor with 40-50 hrs), but never registered so I got the spring warranty deal from Evinrude. Now I get to break it in properly myself and I really do have a new motor.

Glad to here you made it home. That is one tuff motor you got there MJ. As far as I am concernerned a good bilge pump is an important piece of safty equipment as your fire extinguisher. It may not stop the boat from sinking but it could possibbly delay it. With the amount of water you had in your boat I am amazed that you didn't sink. Again I'm glad you are still with us to share all your pearls of V-20 wisdom.

07-27-2007, 12:51 PM
CB you talking about the 248's etc.? I have been noticing a lot of them around here. Guys love em.
I got to tell you as much as I love my V, or loved :'( if I was fishing commercially and my regular routine was out of sight of land by a good distance it would not be my boat.
It would be my preference over a lot of other boats in similar size range because for a 20 footer it is probably the best over all design in my opinion. '
But with what I have seen read or heard in my lifetime being multi miles offshore on a daily basis or even just frequently especially in a tough sea area like New England I think a diffrent hull, at least a few feet longer and two engines would be my preference.
Actually it would be something in a 25-30 foot range, the closer to 30 the better.
I know it is a great hull, and very sea worthy but it is a inshore boat that gives you great all around comfort ride and flexability and the ability to run out on good days, even get you back when it all turns to sh!t , but then you are really just rolling the dice if you do it frequently. I like my kids and even the CEO to much for that, h@ll I like Jacky Daniels too much for that ;D

chumbucket
07-27-2007, 02:25 PM
Similar hull to the 248's. Just a bit shorter. 8) It would be ideal for MJ's use.
