Tryin' to help out an older friend has two batteries been unused in his boat for two yrs + ...

After pulling the caps, water is full, but both have a white substance on top of the plates...cannot tell what it is, but I've never seen this before...:head:...anybody know what this white coating is?...I was gonna hook 'em up to the onboard charger, but now ain't gonna til I find out what this sh!t is...

Calcium sulfate. It's what happens to the lead when it sits inactive with the acid in it. I know they make something to put in the battery to help break it up, but you need to also charge it up fully and do a maintance desulfate charge on it to zap it loose.

Thanks Ferm...and what does one use to desulfinate a battery?...and Spare, I'll ring ya in the mornin'...might be a lil late to wake the missus over a couple of 2 yr old batteries...LOL!!
