Several weeks ago my wife's soon to be 106 year old grandmother left us. My wife and daughter were at her side that Sunday morning.
My wife has always been close to her mother, grandmother, daughter and the grandkids. It was very rare to see one of the six without the other being present and the last couple of months further galvanized their relationship. Back to my grandson, at 5 years old he does seem to understand exactly what death is but may not comprehend the mental loss. At the funeral home he asked my wife's mother if he could leave one of his toys with Nannie to take with her, naturally this was granted and they both help place a small plastic spider with her in the casket. The pallbearers consisted of 3 grandsons and 4 great grandsons When arriving at the grave site one of the pallbearers had to drop out due to a nose bleed. Seeing this my grandson broke free from his mothers hands and ran across the cemetery toward the casket being carried, ignoring her demands to stop and return to her. His answer was, "No Mommy, I have to help them carry Nannie"! The pallbearers simply made room for her great great grandson to help them.
