In my experience using the main motor as a rudder with no connection to the kicker just works OK. *The response isn't as quick as it is when you have a connection. *I bought an EZ Steer to connect the two. *This way you get the still get the benifit of using the main motor as a rudder, but you also have the thrust from the kicker motor pushing you in the right direction. *You have to be sure to get the right size (follow the directions on their home page), but once it's installed, it allows perfect steering from the helm. *It also expands and contracts so you can tilt one or both of the motors without disconnecting. *Here's a link to Cabelas, where I got mine:
