Color and weight say brass.
Grind marks say brass as well, copper would have mushy scrapes and easier to smooth.

I would route a recess in it if you are deterined to stay with the 1", but like MJ I would have used 3/4 to start with. :D

Finally finished her up. Shot some 5200 around the spacers. Never know the differnce.

Hammer, put some kind of STOP to keep that purdy new hatch-lid from layin' over on the cleat behind it...Bet that's what breaks all these things to begin with ... hate to see all that good work go to waste :P maybe a chain or SS coated leader inside the box to the lid to stop it from slammin' over on that cleat...just a thought :) ...
