Carl: I had the same problem and found out that my brushes were worn out completely. If this is the case for you go to Mercrusier parts .com and you can get replacements there. I went ahead and replaced the rotor as well as the brushes and screws, and pump orings.

I did not want to take it apart again so I did it all while I was there.

Update:

I went back to the boat last Monday after work and the engine went right up. *Everything seemed to work fine. *I inspected as much as I could with the boat in the water and I saw the T/T motor cable was wrapped heavily in electrical tape. It has been like that for the two years I've had the engine. *I peeled off all the tape and found about a 1" split in the out insulation. *It didn't seem like the insulation in the conductors was compromised, but I'm sure water was able to get in. *I went backl on Wed, July 4, - gave it another two days to dry out and covered the opening with silicon. *I was hopeful that could get me through the season.

I took the boat out yesterday morning - everything seemed to be fine. *I fished for a few hours - picked up a 23" fluke - got back to the slip and - I hear the clicking of the solenoids but the motor is not turning. *I took Schools advice and tapped it and it slowly started to turn - and then had enough power to get the engine up. *I watched my volt meter as I did this and it seemed to droop about 4 volts with the T/T motor running. *I think its time to repair / replace the T/T motor.

That fluke made a good dinner last night with some sesame ginger sauce on it. * ;)

Ebay usually has a few listed just make sure you get the part numbers right and double check before you order as most places will not return electrical parts. I put one one my neighbors old yammahaha 115 a while back that I got for $118 plus shipping ...The dealer wanted $325...I'm probably going to get one soon for my 225 johnson as its starting to act up from time to time...Frank.

Yeah sfprovyn, that what I am trying to do. Unfortunately everything I have found on my particualr Merc - 1988 Mariner 150 hp - shows that the parts are NLA no longer available and don't give a direct replacement part. I definately don't want to order from ebay unless I am 100% sure it is the right part.

The hammer worked for me a few times as well.
Is this an I/O or O/B. Buddy had teh same problem and found it to be a problem with the lines.
Sorry I gave my old T/T away. :-[

What is the model number of your motor and any other important info. I will see what I can find if you like.

Thanks turbinedoctor - I appreciate that.

It is a 1988 Merc Mariner 150 HP Serial # 0A906046

Model 7150726. It currently has the rectangular Eaton T/T motor.

Thanks again

Carl

Find a long established Merc dealer in your area. Chances are he has a pile of parts motors out back and can fix you right up. Thats how I replaced my T&T assembly.

if you have a good electrical shop around(starter and altenator place), chances are they can take it apart and clean it up to working specs for a little money if your remove the motor(tilt motor, not entire engine) and take it to them
