I've probably sold more than 50 of the pertronix setups with only one failure( it was the coil that burned up the ignitor). They are easy to install and don't require removing the distributor. Just make sure you check the coil for required resistance( thats what burned up the one), check the power wire for voltage( i sometimes go in the harness and eliminate the resisitor wire as wired from the factory) and don't forget to file the distributopr cap to clear the wires. Check the advance weights and springs on the distributor while you have the point plate aprt.

if you happen to know anyone that works on fork lifts, York fork lifts had a conversion for one of their fork truck motors that was basically the same as the pertronix, they used a delco distributor in one of their engiens that has the same topend as the Mercruiser delco distributor

Default ignition system update question

My '89 165hp (3.7l 4cyl) I/O needs a new coil. I thought I would upgrade and get rid of the points / condensor system for a more modern and reliable breakerless type system. I'm looking for suggestions. Anyone have any experiance with this?

thanks
Rick

Rick, there have been some "dead-on" ignition upgrades here ... since I'm outboard, I don't remember specifics, but a couple of the I/O guys have made this improvement...hopefully they'll be along to give ya the specs ;) ...

You can probably pick up a PERTRONIX setup with there coil and upgrade with your existing distributor.

I thought I was going to have to replace mine earlier and when I checked into it Mallory will take your old distrbr and convert it over to electronic for about $70.

Look them up on the net.
