never heard of Mercury oil causing problems in Johnrudes, how does it know its being put in a competitors motor? I know Kekifer and Buckley were pretty competitive, but viral oil is pretty inventive. Serioulsly, all three outboard manufactures will tell you if you can't run their brand TCW3 oil( in normal carburated or EFI twostrokes), at least run an outboard manufactures oil. All the outboard manufacturs have their oils made to proprietary mixes by oil manufcturs, I've found Quaker State shipping statements laying in the bottom of OMC and Mercury oil crates, seen Bel Ray invoices that came with Mercury gear lube. ANyhting that meets TCW3 specs is supposed to be OK in a carb or EFi 2stroke, but Penzoil and Lubrimatic don't build engines, and are not worrying about warranties, to keep their product priced competitive, they are going to meet the minimum specs for TCW3 and leave it at that. The outboard manufactures tend to go beyond the minimum in their blends to help make their engiones last. As far as high performace goes, Klotz or Belray, that oil makes power( seen it proven on a dyno). If you are running a DFI( opti, e-tec, or HPDI), i wouldn't run anything but the best oil the engine manufactures provide for their specific engine, those motors are runing on the edge, a little too much ash or carbon build up can make those motors go boom! I recomend some type of decarb( seafoam, carbon guard, ringfree) in every tank, especially if you slow troll. the local water taxi has put 3000+ hours on their 4 stroke 150 Yamahas, have run ring free in every tank since day one. I have checked the valve clearance every 1000 hours, haven't had to change anything.

Ok, i got the pennzoil synthetic Blend. Guess i will use this from here out.
Another delema, i went to get gas to mix with the oil. Tag on pump says this gas contains ethanol, before useing in boat ask for details. or something like that. Do i need to worry about that?

You need to find out if your boat has an aluminum, fiberglass or plastic tank. If you have an aluminum tank your fine.

no ferm hate to tell ya but Aluminum tanks are the ones having problems with Ethanol, there's a link here somewhere on the site for Pro Boat Builder where the Aluminum tanks are the only ones having issues with that gas.

Go to contents and then sect 46 Lessons from Ethanol

I had been told before that it was the fiberglass tanks that were having the ethanol issues. I know over on the BERTRAM board there haveing issues with it and there origanal fiberglass tanks. Learn somethin new everyday. I do know that the SEARAY I sold earlier this year is haveing issues since he got a tank of E-10, but his is due to trash in the system.

I've never changed one, but quite a few people have done it before. When you unplugged the optical filter harness, did you remove the filter and then recconect the plug that did plug into the filter back into the optic? If you didn't, try it. GM released a bulletin in 97 saying that the optical filter was not required. The main reason that it was installed in the first place was to clear up the AM radio reception. If you didn't plug it in, then your pump is running on base timing(roughly 3.5 degrees) and will not advance. It will also limit your fuel supply as well.

All tanks are having some issues, do to the fact that this new gas cleans the tank sending all the crap to your motor!!
Use a 10 micron filter and carry a extra incase it gets cloged!

All Fibergalss tanks are being replaced as the gas now eats the resin and it leaches out and heads for the motor, then they start to leak.

Some plastic is also having problems, but not to bad.

Alum are fine after a few tanks of gas cause once you get all the crap out of them they run fine!!

Also make sure all hoses are replaced with CG approved hoses, they cost like hell!! But the new gas eats them right up if they are not!!

Newer boats have addressed the problem...but older ones like ours there'll still be issues all the way down to fuel lines...I saw a gas line that was all cracked inside due to E use...if at all possible, find station w/NO alkyhol ;) ...

If ya get a pre-mix bottle, it'll make mixin' a SNAP!! ;) ...
