if he had wanted five grand for the boat i think i would have taken the chance. but i have checked locally with a boat glass repair guy doing it for 20 years, he said he has seen cracking like that before, both were fresh water boats, one had been left docked and gotten caught in a surface water freeze up and the other was with a boat that was beached too hard by accident. i don't know but anything over five g's would keep me up at night

Willy - check out boats.com. They have a bunch listed, including an '89 v20 located in Lavellete New Jersey for $8k. It's listed by the Wellcraft dealer.

My dad has that year and HP engine and has never had any problems - though he maintains it regularly. Obviously get the compression check.

I am pretty sure Ocean Beach marina is a Yamaha dealer (in addition to Wellcraft) - it's possible they will know the history of the boat/engine - may have sold it origionally. If they are selling the boat for a private party they may be less flexible on price (commision wil have to be factored in). If they took the boat in on trade they may be more flexible. Assuming they will even tell you. Apologize in advance if this stuff is obvious.

I would be slightly concerned about the HP. Most on this site think the 115 is a tad underpowered and the 150 is about right (I LOVE my 200hp). I think if you are using this boat in the barnegate bay - Point Pleasent Canal - Barnegate Inlet, you want to have the right amount of power. Take the boat for a sea trial on a Sunday afternoon and see if that 135 is good for you.

I was out in the barnegate bay this past weekend and I was amazed at how many nice v-20s are on the water (I mentioned this in another post.) I gotta beleive they come up for sale often, so don't settle - though I know its hard as summer passes you buy!

Good luck today.

Correction to the above - My dad's is a 130HP Yamaha, not 135, but it is an '89.

Will e-mailed me asking about the compression test. I thought I would post my response since I am hardly an expert on this stuff - I basically learned it here!
I wrote:

Definitely post this Q on the site, you will get plenty of advice. Also, if you have time, do a search on the site (at the top of the forum section) for compression test. Lots will come up.

First you find out what the PSI for the engine cylinders is supposed to be. *Say its 130 psi. Typically, all the cylinder heads should be within 5% of each other - though I seem to recall that it's different with Yamahas in some cases. You then insert a compression gauge into the cylinder head where the spark plug goes and take a reading as the cylinder moves - therefore creating pressure in the cylinder. If compression is off in a cylinder could be a cracked block or a leaking gasket, etc. It's a sure sign the engine needs work.

You MUST have a compression test done. Since Ocean Beach Marina is a dealer, I am sure the mechanic at the dealer will perform it with you there, and charge you of course. Ask him what it should be and watch him do it. If you can't be there, make sure he gives you the numbers. Sometimes people say the engine "has compression". But that is meaningless. What's important is that it is what it should be, based on the manufacturers specification. *Hope this helps, I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but this is something everyone on the Wellcraftv20 site swears by. Last thing you want is a lemon.

Hope this e-mail doesn't find you too late. I'll post on the site too - someone may have the compression numbers for an 89 Yamaha 135 or have something to add to this or correct me if I am wrong. *

That boat looks real clean in NJ.

Compression for the Yamaha 130's will usually test out b/w 135 - 140 psi in each cylinder.

Remember to run the engine first to get it warmed up.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also on those early Yamaha's (pre-1993) outboards

Shift Shaft - There is a small gap b/w the mid section housing and lower unit. The shift shaft runs down the middle. The shaft rotates to shift the motor in and out of gear. If it's rusty then it probably hasn't ever been replaced (they last about 15years) . It's a real PITA to replace them (have to pull the powerhead). Make sure the boat shift cleanly and if the shaft hasn't been replaced - use it a negotiating point b/c that repair will be expensive.

Steering Arm - These get really rusty and rot off if the motor was neglected.
