Yeah i like this too Pipe lol The old 2 thursty 5 motor have a new name lol. But notice in this pic the motor is on a plate on the transom signs of a bad transom :-/ And he has put a midsection extention on the motor. It's actually a 20 inch motor with the 5 inch ext. Humm :-/ plus the plate on the transom that's a bad sign.

RAP - in 1986 (I think) Evinrude/Johnson switched thier HP ratings from powerhead to prop.

At that time, a 100hp motor went down to 88hp. Extrapolating the numbers upward at a loss of 12% would make the antique 235 hp motor about a 200hp or less.

Some estimates I've found indicate as much as 25% diff between head and prop. If this were true, the antique 235 would be about a 175hp. Depending on prop and compression on this motor, and the weight of older motors, 41 mph might be reasonable.

Good point(s), Blue. Age, compression loss, take their toll on an engine. The 155 hp Johnson I had would push the ol' Pipe Dream along at 38 mph back in the day. But in later years that went down to 32-33 mph, all other things being pretty equal.

Skool, I don't much care for that extension, either. And that plate goes away down the transom, often not a good sign. However, it isn't uncommon to see yards use a plate when re-powering, just to be on the safe side, even if the transom checks out.

Thats true, I've seen guys put them on newer boats too. Supposedly preventing problems especially if powered on the heavy side of the ratings :-/

Nice V-20, but way out of my buget. Maybe I can cut his grass for the next ten years to lower the price. ;D

All:

I can answer the 2 thirsty 5 questions from the voice of experience. 41 is just about right with a 14.5X19 pitch prop with the motor turning 5200 - 5300. The extension can be easily removed ( I have one installed on my unit) and can be reused on a number of lower units, making a 20 a 25 " shaft. They work quite well but are rather pricey. Why he's running the motor so jacked up I can't even guess. But if he was smart he's pull the extension and sell it on ebay seperately, lower the motor to where it should be and make himself a couple of bucks in the process.
